I went to Texas with Lufthansa november 2003 and had the limit of 2X32 kilos in cattle class. Seems like UK has their own rules...

I transited thru Frankfurt since I always had great trouble in Heathrow

Here is information from Lufthasa

Baggage Allowance

Free baggage allowance

For international and german travel (except USA, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean) on Lufthansa sectors the free baggage allowance in Economy Class is 20 kg, in Business Class 30 kg and in First Class 40 kg. These amounts are valid for all Star Alliance members.

Weight Concept, wc

Weight concept applies worldwide, except to/from US, via US for the sectors to/from US, to/from Canada, to/from Mexico-Europe, for fares from Western Africa in both directions, for fares from Brazil to Europe/Middle East in both directions and for Star Alliance round the world fares.

40 kg for flights in First Class

30 kg for flights in Business Class

20 kg for flights in Economy Class

20 kg additional to class allowance: Holder of the Lufthansa Senator Card or Star Gold Card.

Piece Concept, pc

- To/from USA/US territories, to/from Canada

- Via US for the sectors to/from US (other sectors remain wc)

- To/from Mexico-Europe on LH only

- For fares from Western Africa in both directions on LH only

- For fares from Brazil to Europe/Middle East in both directions

- Star Alliance round the world fares

pieces: 2 pieces for all classes

one extra: Star Alliance Gold customers

weight: each piece not exceeding 32 kg

volume: Each piece may not exceed 158 cm (length + height + width) and in Economy Class 2 pieces together may not exceed 273 cm.

Hand baggage

One piece of hand baggage per passenger is allowed on board. Two pieces are permitted if you travel First or Business Class. (Exception: on flights from and to US, Canada and Mexico only one piece of carry on baggage is permitted in all classes.)

Exceptions may be made, for example,on flights operated by Lufthansa CityLine or one of our Team Lufthansa partners, on heavily booked flights -mostly intra-German -and in countries with legal restrictions like Italy. Hand baggage must not exceed 55x40x20 cm or 22x16x8 inch (57x54x15 cm or 22x21x6 inch in case of a foldable garment bag), or weigh more than 8 kg. One piece should be stowed under the seat in front of you, the other one in the overhead bins. Please take care when opening the bins while the aircraft is airborne or after the landing.

Please observe the following change of procedure at Frankfurt airport:

At Frankfurt airport,carry-on baggage gauges are attached to all security control machines so that the size of hand baggage can be checked. Access to the gates through security control will only be possible with hand baggage pieces not exceeding the size allowance. Passengers bringing oversized pieces of baggage to security control will be sent back by the staff to the airline check-in counter and must give up their baggage for check-in there. Therefore, please observe the maximum size allowed for hand baggage and check in larger pieces of baggage in advance.

Additional free baggage items

On all international flights the following objects may be taken free of charge as additional hand baggage: 1 coat or wrap, 1 handbag, 1 umbrella or walking stick, 1 small camera, 1 pair of binoculars, a reasonable amount of reading material, baby food for the flight and a baby 's carrycot.

Disabled passengers are allowed a wheelchair in addition to their free baggage allowance, but it must be checked in.

Excess baggage

Baggage exceeding the free baggage allowance may be transported as excess baggage; the charge is 1,5% of the highest one-way Economy Class fare per kg (for Europe about one-way Business Class fare), or a set fee for baggage transported on the piece-baggage concept.

Special baggage

Special baggage charges apply for following items:skis, bicycles, surfboards, windsurfing.

Unaccompanied baggage

It is also possible to transport baggage which exceeds the free baggage allowance at reduced rates, either as unaccompanied baggage or as air freight. In such cases the baggage should be presented to the Lufthansa freight office at the airport a few days before your departure. The baggage is then subject to the conditions for freight transportation, i.e. the customs and import regulations may differ from those applicable for normal checked baggage transported with the passenger. Please contact the Lufthansa freight department for exact details.

There are a number of exceptions to free baggage allowance and excess baggage, which you can enquire at your travel agency or every Lufthansa office

Cheers

There are two rules for the world flying public re luggage allowances.

One rule for Americans; and

One rule for the rest of the World.

Sounds like BS, I'm afraid not.

Standard luggage allowance for economy for the rest of the world is 20kg + the carry-on allowance. You are right this is around 7kg and set by the weight the crap cabin lockers are designed to hold (with a safety margin obviously).

You sometimes can get away up to 33 kg (checked luggage) without being charged excess, but it is really hit and miss and depends on the airline, the airport, the staffperson, whether they are moody that day etc.

On my last safari I had around 32 kg in two bags including a gun case. QANTAS allowed it all without charge. Arrived in Jo'burg etc. Flew out to Perth from Jo'burg. Jo'burg has a lovely counter BEFORE you get to airline counters where the bastards weigh your bags. You don't get to the airline service counter unless you pay through the nose for excess. Jo'burg airport absolutely sucks and I would avoid it anyway if I could purely because of this practice.

IF I HAD BEEN AMERICAN I WOULD HAVE BEEN CHARGED NO EXCESS BECAUSE I WOULD GET A HIGHER ALLOWANCE. The cost to me was only US$230 or something ridiculous like that.

I always argue about this just for "fun" but of course never any result.

Some airlines have restricted the unfair discriminatory additional allowance for the Yanks only on trips directly to and from the USA. (no offence to American hunters as they don't set the rules of course).

Before of these checklists on AR. They WILL push you over the allowance.

But sometimes you just have to grin and pay for the weight if you want to pursue your sport.
