Hello to all of you on the other side of the Atlantic I would like to get some opinions on the Norma Oryx bullets. I use the Norma Vulkans in 8x57JS Mauser. I have found the Vulkans to be accurate in my rifle, and would like to try the Oryx to see if they are just as accurate. Also the performance Vulkans is excellent on Whitetail deer. I experienced complete penetration, with good size exit holes. They were broadside lung shots, so hardly no meat damage to speak of. I am planning on hunting some European or Russian wild boar next year, so I would like to know if the performance of the Oryx is as good as advertised by Norma, and better or the same as the Vulkan. I am sure it is, but would like to have more insight from real hunters.

Johann, as far as I have experience with, is the Vulcan no shrapnell on such low velocity calibers like 8x57 or 308. My experience is also very good with Vulcan (mainly on boar). I have no experience with Oryx, but the basic construction is the same except the connection of lead and copper. So it may have better chance to suvive a hit on a big bone without total destruction. In my 9.3 the 232gr vulkans appear to open slower, penetrate further and end up a better shape than the same weight Oryx's (in test media) Deerdogs used the 200gr Oryx's in his 8x57, one shot kill on zebra. The same weight Vulkan disintegrated on a neck shot the year before on some big antelope (I think) I like the Oryx but for me and my rifle it's not a whole lot different than the Vulkan. In your calibre it would appear to be much better.

25 cal nut, As mentioned above I used the 196 grain 8mm Oryx at about 2500 fps in my Heym SR20 on a bushveld plains game trip last year. The year before I used the Vulkan in a 8x57 Mannlicher. Both were accurate bullets for hunting. About MOA. On the two hunts I shot about 15 Impala, 3 Kudu, 1 Zebra and around a dozen warthog. I only had to shoot one critter twice and that was standing next to a kudu I had spined with the Vulkan. I did not recover any of the bullets. The most memorable shot was on a 200+ metre zebra stallion. One bullet in the shoulder and it fell within 5 metres. Standing, off the sticks. Now I think of it another memorable shot was on an impala ram at 200 metres, facing me head down feeding. I put the bullet in the back of it's neck, out of the front, in again and down through the heart out near where the last rib meets the sternum, then took a back leg virtually off at the knee. Hit by the Hammer of Thor, as they say. Standing, off the sticks. I only have good things to say about the Oryx. I rate them right up there with the Barnes X for killing power. At 2500 fps there was no bloodshot meat either. Regards [ 09-09-2003, 15:03: Message edited by: Deerdogs ]

Thanks for the great input! I am going to go out and get some Oryx loads and try them for accuracy in my rifle. If they are just as accurate as the Vulkans, then I have two great bullets to shoot. I doubt I will get the chance to go to Africa and shoot the great animals that you did Deerdogs or shoot moose or fallow deer like Johan did. I am going to go and shoot a hog next year, and will be deer hunting in Dec. So I will let you know how I do this season. I will also give an update on the accuracy of the Orxy. Thanks again.
