Just thought i would post some pics of some nice Roe Bucks taken last week on Islay.

The gentleman in the picture is an American client i took out for the week. The other two Bucks i managed to take myself during my time there.

The third buck down i managed to stalk to within 60 yarsd of before taking the shot.

I was stalking an area of peat moss which goes down to the coast (the roe also venture to the shoreline)and also is very flat apart from two small hills which are located further inland. I was on one of the hills glassing the area when i saw this buck just over 1000 yards away across the moss. I first saw him when the sun came out from behind a cloud for about 5 mins and lit the area up including the buck in his bronze summer coat.

After assessing the size of him the best i could at that distance i decided he was a takeable buck (i could see he had a thick neck and tall antlers) and that i should get closer in. I started off to close the distance. I managed to get into a good rested position on a raised mound about 120 yards away but i could then see he had started to dose off and i felt i could get closer. I crawled to within 60 yards of him and rested my rifle on a mound and poked it through some tall grasses which were growing out of the top. I had plently of time as the wind was going from left to right across me and i was completely concealed. After watching him for about 15 minutes his head dropped suddenly onto the ground and he remained in this position for about 2 minutes. He then woke up when a shower of rain came in and that is when i decided to take the shot at the base of his neck.

A fantstic experience and one of those stalks i will never forget.

Hope you enjoy the pics

Thanks

thumb Jon way to go - congrats - that 3rd buck of yours looks at his peak - perhaps bit on the old side I guess (by the neck and bully grey head)?

P.S. Weidmannsheil Andre!

Thanks folks

FB he actually isn't particularly well endowed with mass but he has the height and bags of character.

Mouse

Yes i estimated him to be about 10/11 years old and you are correct i think he was just past it. I couldn't get over his neck thickness either.

The other 2 stalks were interesting as well but it was the 3 rd which was the most eventful i suppose.

Sorry i thought you were refering to the 2nd buck of mine but re-reading your post you mean the 2nd one full stop. Yes he is better in terms of mass but he is lacking slightly in this derpartment. He had a good amount of pearling though and the colouration of the antlers was a deep dark brown almost black without the flash. What is interesting is that the 2nd and 3rd bucks were taken in compketely different areas and the body weight of the 3rd was significantly more tahn the 2nd even though they were both old bucks. The 2nd one i shot was living in a swamp area with 2 other bucks (one a young 6 and the other a v v old buck going back)the swamp being about 4 to 6 acres in size. I have shot a buck in the swamp area before and he had this same colouration and similar body size.

Hi Jon

Congratulations on the three roe bucks, I wish I was back up in Scotland as the buggers are ripping the crap out of my trees.
Management with 'extreme predjudice' comes to mind.
My only concern is your hat seems a little foppish.

Regards

Mark

Thanks for the knid words. Just like to point out that it is not me in the picture. The gent in the first pic is an American client i was guiding.

Just out of curiosity, whereabouts in Scotland (roughly) is your ground?

Thanks

JB

Cheers Jon

I had wondered about the change in rifles Big Grin
I have about 310 acres just south of Dumfries and I hope to start panting about 5000 trees this Autumn and then every Autumn till I die.
Slightly blurry pic I apologise but it was cold on Christmas Morning.

Not me in the picture just the chief cook.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mouse

Though you might like a better view of Lola conserving energy. The secong is them guarding their toys.

Nice pictures, thank you.

As already stated, #3 is especially nice!

I've got 3 so far, nothing special but did see a very good one. It seems the rut has started already. Ah, the pleasures of summer: Go either hunting or fishing after WORK!
