Below is a link to a beautiful Kri-Kri ibex taken by Rex Baker on a Grecian island. These are very interesting animals to hunt and a unique trophy.

http://www.huntingreport.com/t...y_gallery.cfm?id=334

The hunting for them is restricted by a number of regulations making the taking of such a nice trophy quite an accomplishment.

Isn't this the place where you need to use a shotgun loaded with slugs?

Yes it is, Bill. Not only that, but no scopes. And the terrain is very thick brush. And a it's a small animal.

It's a very challenging hunt. Now, if you want something to do when your wife wants to visit Greece....

7500 Euros all in last I checked.

All hunts are 7 days and nights (5 hunting days) 2x1 and they apparently take no more than 20 animals per year in early November. You can also take Mouflon for an 800 Euro trophy fee.

If you can get hold of a copy, Petersons Hunting Jan 08.There is a very good hunt report by Boddington in it were he tells of shooting the potental world record Kri Kri.

I looked at this hunt some years ago but didn`t take it much further.

If I recall correctly, you are not allowed "rifled" barrels in Greece, but i think you can us a "rifled" choke, and you cannot us scopes either!.So in essence you are using a sabot slug in a smoth bore gun with a couple of inches of "rifled" choke to get any kind of descent accuracy, screwed into the end, and after all that open sights as well!! The Greeks dont make the hunting easy do they.

Shot in the arse? at least he hit it yankees

I think that hunting that kind of animal in that environement with a shotgun and open sights is absurd, what a silly regulation! Instead of allowing and encouraging clean killings, greek authorities force the hunters to take hazardous shots. That hole in the arse doesn't surprise me at all. And the price!!!!! If I could have 7500€ to spend on a foreign hunt, I would certainly choose something else.

I think the price is actually in line with a great deal of European (though not Asian) Ibex hunting is it not? I don't think any of the Spanish Ibex species are any cheaper to hunt and, while I believe one can chase Alpine Ibex in Italy or Switzerland, the costs are well into five figures for foreigners no? Further, for better or worse, 7500 Euros for the hard core sheep and goat hunters of the world is actually a "cheap" hunt by comparison to a lot of stuff these guys go after. When you consider the unique nature of this species in particular, the market will (for now) certainly support what is being asked for these hunts.

As for the gun regs...yes they are ridiculous but there is so little big game hunting in Greece relative to bird shooting that they aren't likely to change them any time soon. On a related note, I sent Gen. Boddington an email about this hunt and he graciously took the time to reply. We had a nice conversation and he very flatly (and honestly) told me that he got "very lucky" to fill his tag given the terrain and equipment constraints. Still...it looks like fun!

Best,

tendrams

You are right Tendrams, I wasn't clear enough; 7500€ can be considered as normal for an euro Ibex hunt. When I wrote that I would choose "something else" I ment another kind of game, since I personally don't feel any interest in hunting any Ibex. Smiler

I'm with you. In fact, I have chosen other hunts besides this one in the past. I do like this species in particular, but I have thankfully never really caught the sheep/goat bug.

Best,

Yeh, Boddington does seem to be one of the more down to earth gun writters out there,(he doesnt like to us the B Gen bit" but he isnt daft either, nothing wrong with making a marginal hit (with the tools that he had) and writting about it, he`s only human and relys on his writtings to make a living.

The big goat was his 2nd for that trip,he shot a smaller one the day before and the F+G gave him another day to hunt.He hunted on his own as his guide had to do other things,so to self guide yourself into a record book animal (if you are into that stuff)and be the first NON European to hunt the island as well,he must of thought all his Christmases came at once!.

As for the cost, it does seem high but then they are they only pure blood KRI KRI in the world (or so i am led to beleive) and for people that are doing the "goat slam" it would be a small price to pay.

This is really only true if you don't count the last few centuries of cross-breeding with domestic goats before kri-kri were moved to the island.

I did see the bit about smoothbore only and would be horrified if I gave the impression that I was being disparaging in anyway about the good Colonel, There is a running joke between a few forum members and myself about me shooting too far back.

I thought I would get mine in before before any of the resident wits waded in Big Grin

Amir
