Hi all,

In the ongoing saga that is my new rifle, I'm starting to think about what scope to put on top. The one that seems to tick all the boxes is the Swaro 1.7-10x42 Z6.

A couple of questions:

1) Does anyone use one of these?
2) I currently have a 8x56 PF and 3-10x50. Is moving to a 42mm objective lens going to reduce light gathering by much?
3) Has anyone upgraded a PF Swaro to a Z6 and noticed much difference?
4) Apart from Zeiss, does anything else come close in its performance?

Rgds,
FB

BTW PeteE, the info on the Z6 you requested is on it's way. The delay is from head office but should be here any time.

Can't help with anything else, but at maximum magnification (10x, or whatever actual magnification the scope yields, which is often something less), your exit pupil (assuming the actual effective objective lens diameter is 42mm) will be 4.2mm. At minimum light, your eye may open just a little wider than this, say 5-6mm, depending on your age and health. So, in theory, when set at 10x such a scope may not be quite as bright as one with a larger effective objective lens. With that said, by turning back the magnification to 7x or less, then you should find no difference (all things like glass quality and coatings being equal) in the "brightness" of the sight picture. In most low-light shooting situations, it is impractical and inadvisable to use a magnification greater than about 7-8x anyway, so you are giving up little to use the smaller objective. What you gain in portability, lower weight, more appropriate mounting height, etc., should be well worth the trade-off for a scope that limits your "full brightness" magnification to something less than 8 power.

Of course, all of these comments apply only to the relative utility of the scope in extreme low light conditions. When used anytime between the hours of approximately civil twightlight on relatively clear days, or between sunrise and sunset with any kind of cloud cover, your eye pupil dialation will be less than that of the scope's minimum exit pupil of 4.2mm, thus the scope will effectively be as "bright" as one with a larger objective even at the maximum magnification.

Will be shooting the exact same scope on friends 06 tomorrow evening and will compare to own 6x42PF.

Will let you know outcome.

You can probably fit an x50mm objective in the lowest tallies for an M700 with sporter barrel.........

...I've got one sitting on a U/O rifle in .30-06, that is finally that I just have to go pick up from the shop in Milan.
I'll let you know how it goes once I do.

Another scope I am considering in a similar category is the Nightforce 2.5-10 x 24 though it doesn't have the large ovbjective lense you may want but I'm fairly confident it wouldn'tdissapoint.
I'm going to swap the S&B 1.5-6x42 on my .375H&H to one of these Nightforce.
Cheers.

Regarding your questions.

1, No not me peronaly but a guy I hunt with, he is content with the scope.

2, Yes you will loose a bit of light gathering capability, in tests the Z6 x42 lost out to a Zeiss Variopoint with 42 mm lens.

3, My hunting buddie mentioned above, whent from a Ziess, older version to the Z6, he is happy as can bee.

4, No for the intended purpose and versatility, there is no scope that can touch this.

Best regards Chris

1) Not me, but I have a Z6i 1-6x24 and I'm very happy with it.
2) You should be fine.
3) I have a PF 8x50, which I love, but I think the glass on the Z6i is marginally better. Off course, you cannot really compare the 2.
4) I tested the Z6i and a Zeiss Varipoint 1,1-4x24 side by side and I preferred the Swaro.

1.No, but a friend dose/did, clear optics but dont drop it!!! They break.
2.Yes, though not much.
3.Yes, my friend. Clearer optics.
4.Schmidt&bender is the way to go!!! I have a 4-16x50PM11 heavy, but as clear/clearer than Z6/Ziess, but can take abuse. I have also shot with 3-12x50 precicon hunters and would have on over swaro/ziess any day.p.s. I shot with a 4-16x50 swaro with TDS reticule for 4 years before I tryed S&B, I dident think it could get any better than swaro untill I saw the light......
