Does anyone have prefered glass for use in the UK?
Any recommendations, preferably for the cheaper end of the market.

Binos or mono suggestions welcome.

My old Grandad's Bino's have finally given up the ghost and I'm looking for a replacement.

Swarovski 7x42 SLC get my thumbs up for woodland stalking. Also have a pair of 8.5x42 el that are lighter but dont have quite the same depth of field. They would be better on the hill though. Leica or Zeiss are also excellent.

Hope this helps

Hi Dan

I used with great success optolyth alpine in 10x40, they are absolutly excellent for UK stalking and Optycron 10x28 for Africa/summer stalking. I compared them with the Swarofski/leica/zeiss which were better but not enough to justify the double in price.
Both glasses are light and extremy robust with good coatings, nitrogen filled and good twighlight values.
I found a supplyer web site for you

I have Optolyth scope on my .22 and it is great value for money. I had some somall problems geting the reticle clear but once it was sorted the quality of the optics is well worth the money.

It's always worth keeping an eye on Ebay as you can often pick up top end makes for big discounts.

Dan,

Like MarkH & FB I'm also a big Optolyth fan. I currently use an Optolyth Royal 8x56 which is IMO the best kept optical secret in the binocular world. I also had a pair of 7x42 Apline's but they were unfortuneately stolen.....gone but sorely missed.

I'd suggest taking a look a Frankonia's latest special offers, here's their export (English language) website:

https://export.frankonia.de//scripts/home/home.php

In their current German Flyer they've got a pair of Optolyth Royal 8x63's (a monster glass) on Special Offer for €uro 599,-

If you're looking for something to throw in the car, an extra set or a light stalking glass (fantastic value) they've also got former DDR Military Zeiss Jena 8x30's (€uro 59,-) & 6x30's (€uro 45,-). With the strong Pound this offer should be a No-Brainer!

Have Fun!

Cheers,

Thanks for that guys, I've never heard of Optlyth before but you've given me enough info to go do some homework, Cheers,

Dan

Dan,

I actually know very little about this make part from the fact that I have one on my rifle and I can hit the odd thing with it.

When I told Mr OneShot at potters my budget he pulled it out of the cupboard and proceeded to attach it to my rifle. I asked if perhaps I should also look at some other scopes in the price range, and he suggested that I stop coming up with silly ideas on a busy saturday afternoon as I would only end up choosing that one anyway, and if I didn't then I'd be making a mistake!!!

Don't you just love getting abused by your mates.... Wink

FB,

I normally wind up buying something else just to spite them, but I have been know to sneak back in when the main-man ain't there and buy what they suggested anyway. Just in the process of doin' that with my last scope purchase Roll Eyes

Was told to buy a pistol scope, shown the pistol scope, liked the pistol scope..... went and got a red-dot sight, now gotta go back for the pistol scope???
