What is the public opinion of hunting in France? Have the anti-hunters ruined things, or do the French care too much about good food to pay them any mind?

Thanks,

Okie John

France is one of the countries in Europe that has the most countries after Spain and Italy. It's a size thing France is the 3rd biggest country in Europe (if you count Russia). Tons of land lots of game.

My impression is that the anti-hunters are on the retreat in Germany, due to their violence as well as proximity to totalitarian movements and religious sects.

Stop, make that France has the most hunters after Spain and Italy. Germany and most of the Scandnavian countries have about 300,000 hunters. Spain and Italy have several million.

How crowded are Spain and Italy?

Where do they hunt in Italy (north or south, or both?) Seems like they would hunt more in the south but I have no clue.

Italy is the same size as California and has the same number of people and hunters. Not much room! Some big game in the north, and not much other than starlings and planted pheasants in the south.

Spain is the same size as Texas and has the same number of people and hunters. More room than Italy, and a ton of hunting but it's all expensive.

Most middle class Euros hunt in Scotland, Poland, CZ, or Hungary.

D99,
please do not exagerate, Itly has +/- 800.000 hunters.
C__Q,
Hunt is all over the country, the differences are based on the types of hunt. At north is growing the big game hunts and sometime the hunters are specialized in this kind of hunt, at the south rabbits, hares and birds hunts are preferred.
Take in consideration that Italy is long country that we divide in northern, middle and southern Italy. Of course in the middle Italy (Rome, Florence and Ancona are in this aerea) you will find the mix of the hunting passions.

I've heard that France has more total number of hunters than anyother European country, but as a % of the population the Sweden and Norway have more hunters. But that might be old.

You'll find a very vibrant and dynamic hunting culture in France. It runs the gamber from local farmer hunters, through middle class guys, and then really wealthy "top class" guys, much like the US for that matter. There is an anti-hunting movement, but in the countryside hunters are looked upon favorably. Its a great place to go hunting actually Cool

FWIW, 10.3% of the male population in Norway hunts. And amongst females, the percentage was 0.6% of women above the age of 16 (this seems to be increasing though!).

I don't know about the other countries.

Steve I am just going with what I have been told in gunshops in Catania.

If I had a choice later in life between sharing Italy with 55 million Italians or California with 55 million Californians, I know I would have more hunting in California, but I would probably live in Italy anyway.
