Well, those that I call the "bunnyhuggers" have apparently scored a victory in Switzerland. If true, it seems Swiss farmers can't even restrain certain animals:

Europe : Switzerland: Animal Rights Law Passed
on 2008/6/19 16:42:11 (48 reads)
Switzerland has recently passed a law with the intention of clarifying acceptable treatment of “social animals.â€

The law that goes into effect September first establishes desirable treatment of animals such as dogs, fish, horses, and even rhinoceroses. An array of animals has been included under the bracket of “social animals†and a part of this new law states that any of these animals will be considered abused if they are not able to cohabit with another of their species.

Under the law dog owners must take a two part course on recognizing the needs of the dog, and properly walking a dog. Swiss fisherman will now be required to participate in a course that teaches them how to catch fish humanely. Catch and Release fishing has been banned; instead fishers must now kill the fish immediately after being caught with “a sharp blow to the head with a blunt instrument.â€

This law affects farmers as well, who are barred from restraining horses, sheep, and goats. Pigs and cows must not be forced to reside in areas with hard flooring.

Although animal rights groups are jumping for joy over this new law, many Swiss farmers are complaining of the numerous extra costs it will require them to run their farms.

I can't believe catch and release fishing is considered more abusive to a fish than catching it and whacking it on the head with a big stick!!!

there has to be some weird logic in there somewhere But I can't see it...

War is what this is....the war of the animal rights extremists versus the sane. And the sad part is that these SOBs are everywhere.....as I read this it is pure nonsense. Watch the fish population decline in a hurry in the prime spots. Roll Eyes

Catch and release in theory is illegal here, too. When there is a one fish limit and after 5 minutes of casting you catch a legal sized trout, you have to whack it an dstop fishing.

That is, at least the legal theory we owe to that moronic idiots...

It's sad that a small number of people in democracies could force such inane laws on a majority of people. But it happens all over, I suppose. Also I would think that most of those stupid laws are pretty much unenforceable anyway.

I also wonder if any of these laws might affect hunting in the area. (Yet.)

I do admit to not practicing catch and release when hunting.

Funny how the same antis who push to outlaw catch and release fishing propose a similar strategy for huntimg using paint balls as a substitute for real bullets.

Sad idiots.

i have actually heard of "catch and release" rhino-hunting.

they shoot it with tranqualizer gun, and then take photos and clear away.

not my type of hunting, though.

That sounds like a good way to get yourself turned into a rhinoceros doormat!
