This whole European board is driving me crazy. I'm in the same boat as Bog, stuck in a classroom with a "chatter" of 11-year-olds while all around me people are going hunting. Waaahhhhhhh!! All I can do is wait for summer . . . again!

Hi all,

thanks for the good wishes. I believe UK hunter posted something that was removed from the forum... He obviously knows me too well!!!

I didn't fire the gun once and still have my salmon fishing record in tact.... No salmon!!

But what a fantastic break. We stalked all day Thursday and saw 200+ deer on the boundary peaks around the estate. Nothing was available for a shot and the wind (FIERCE!!) was pushing them all off property.

As we had one day for the three of us left, I decided to take the 3rd opportunity if it arose. Early mng saw us stlalking a lone stag close to a bit of forestry. I sat up on a mound and watched as Glen approached what was potentiallyhis first deer. Suddenly after 25mins, the stag went from being settled, and got up and ran straight towards me. at 150yds he dissapeared behind the mound in front of me. I waited with the 308 just incase he came over the top, but then Glen's shot sounded. when we got to him, the stag was a stunning 10 pointer, taken cleanly through the engine room at 100yds. To say he was thrilled is a massive understatement!!! More like walking on air!!!

After a spot of lunch and a couple of fruitless hours glassing the hill we spotted a bunch of 150+ reds above a peice of forestry. There was one mature stag there and they were at least 2 miles away. With a stalk lasting nearly 2 hrs, Pete got upto the ridgeand took his first stag at 120yds with a perfect heart shot. The beast was a 12 year old stag with 6-7 points. Another thrilled stalker, although carrying the beast the mile back to where the car could get to brought us some way back to earth!!!

Although it would have been nice to get my stag too I really didn't mind, given the circumstances. I had a couple of opportunities at a roe buck but decided against the somewhat rangy shots in heavy cover. The sight of a covey of 6-7 black grouse flushing and curling over me in a 50mph wind is something I won't forget in a hurry.

Besides next year he might havea bigger rack!!

Anyway happy hunting and tight lines to those more skilled/Lucky than I.

Sounds like a nice weekend! I assume the estate didn't put ponies at your disposal, that would have been useful I daresay.
By the way, did you have 1 stalker with all three of you? I suppose the weather was abysmal, it was crappy down here too.
