Well, it looks like our son will be moving to Scotland in the summer of 2010. Is there any hunting for Red deer or Roe deer around Edinburg? Will be planning a visit some time and might as well try to find a reasonable hunt. Thanks, JC

Plenty of stalking available within an hour or two of Edinburgh, but it will depend on the time of year you visit. The season for roe bucks in Scotland is from 1st April to 20th Oct while for Stags (Red & Sika) its 1st July to 20th Oct... For stags, probably the best time is early October in the rut, while Roe buck stalking is at its best from May until the end of the rut ie the end of June / early July... With Roe, the period just after the Rut can be dead as the Bucks tend not to be very active but if you went after a Stag in early October, I would expect you'd have a decent chance of a roe as well by then... In simple terms the minimum caliber for Roe is .222Rem, while for Stags its .243win.. You can bring your own rifle over, but you need to get a permit first, but that is normally done on your behalf by who ever your hunting with and its a pretty painless process. Alternatively, you can normally borrow what is termed an "Estate rifle" and that is what many oversea's hunters do..

Thanks, Pete after I posted I relized that I had mispelled Edinburgh. Where can I find a list of guides in this area? I would rather just borrow a gun rather than bring my own and have to worry about it. Thanks, JC
