Hi all,

I'm justy curious to know how everyone is getting on with their cover crops this year?

We have three strips of cover whhich are ranging from "so-so" to "terrible" in quality scale. The biggest problem seems to be the lack of rain so far.

Our crops are a mixture of Millet, Sorghum and Sunflowers. The sorghum has come up in bits but is very patchy and I can't see anything else there.

I think the Rooks had the millet we broadcast and Dug up the Sunflowers.

I'm starting to panic and thought I'd checkon how everyone else is dioing.

Rgds,

The maize seems a bit behind but OK. They were watering it in some places.

Put mine in a bit late, but had no end of rain since. That said, it is looking a bit thin.

Squirrels are the main culprits, on one patch I counted 13 of them munching into the seed.

The cover we put in is for Pheasant and Partridge. I have 1200 arriving this weekend and in a few weeks they will be getting around the shoot into the woods and covers.

The idea is to provide shelter and some food value although we hopper feed wheat as the mainstay.

Come the season we drive the cover towards the guns and get some payback.

This year, as I am waiting to go into hospital for surgery on my spine and my partner in matters pheasant has unexpected work commitments, the decision was taken not to put down birds as they would not recieve the proper care and attention. Therefore no crop was put down, if the state of my garden is anything to go by, I am not too upset.

I shall have to shoot more of other peoples birds this year as a consolation Big Grin
