This morning I got to my high seat 45minutes before shootable light. A high seat is required for safety. Within 3 minutes does and fawns were all around me one even browsing on the holly bush at the bottom of the high seat that Poppy was lying in (I have complete confidence in her in such situations). They left the area slowly.

I waited and waited for a buck or pricket to show (I could here the stand buck groaning all the while), finally I gave up but made a bargain with myself that I would wait for the time it took to pour a coffee and drink it. Sure enough as the cup was poured a pricket meandered past me which I was able to shoot. I finished the coffee and got down from the seat. I had a final look through my binos to see if there was anything else and was rewarded with a big buck moving in from the left. I got back up the seat very quickly, checked with my binos then tracked him through the scope. It is very thick cover, every time he stopped he wasn’t in a shootable position. Finaly he came clear, trotting away – I let out a gruff bark, he stopped and I shot. The shot felt good and I saw him flinch so I did not mind when he trotted off. I waited 10 minutes then went to the spot with Poppy on the trailing lead. She found him 20yards into the bushes.

While I was taking the photo there were deer all around hence the dog looking so alert.

Congratulations on a nice buck. They are obviously still rutting. I shot a pricket last tuesday evening and i could here a buck grunting in the thick stuff and at near last light i nearly had an op to take him but never saw him clearly enough.

Great you were able to capitalise on both opportunities.

Great result and congratulations once again.

1894, a double Weidmannsheil! Sounds like a productive morning!

I'll include the pictures directly - just to save people from having to click around...

Hey 1894, that is a beautiful fallow buck. Where did you get him? I have always wanted to take a fallow deer. Nice dog as well. What caliber did you shoot him with? Great job!

That is a beautiful specimen 1894! Will the fallow lose their spots later on in the season?

I have noticed that wild fallow often have one smaller antler with a narrower palm...is that a trait that is common where you hunt?

Griff,

I think the walk from the car was 200yards and the drag to the car (after I had driven it into the wood) about 5yards. Then came the lift into the boot......

Rifle is my roe stalking 6mm rem - nice looking but stable stock that gets used in all weathers. Bit heavy in weight for Scottish stalking and a bit light in calibre for reds. I generaly use my 6.5x55 for fallow but not with the partitions I used in Arran - when I get a chance I'll rezero it but the 6mm has been putting down big bucks with authority.

How's your 264WM going?

1894mk2,
the winnies going ok, got a B&C stock for it about a week ago, haven't had chance to try it out yet.
Took it Arran on the last week of the stags, and managed to bag on the last day of the season, a magnificent longe range shot of approx 18yds, yes 18 paces! Got an exit wound ok!
It was only a spiker weighing in @ 75kg clean.
Have shot roe with it,it does less damage than the 25 which is some consideration with business were in..
you will have to come up with Pete and have a day or two's stalking with us, preferably after Christmas..

regards

griff
