I will be visiting Dublin in May and like to know if any of you have any adress for gunshops in the city ??
I´m looking for a new scope to my roe rifle, preferably 7x50, 8x50 or something in that class.
It seems that Ireland is non-existent in this forum, why ??
Strict gun laws or lack of game to hunt ??

30 English miles south of Dublin are the mountains of Wicklow. The area is covered in Sika and Red/Sika Hybrid deer. They are almost at pest proportions!

Don't know about gun shops - however, contact John at johnfenton1@eircom.net - he is a professional guide and keen shooter. Living only a short way from Dublin - he will be able to give you the information you need.

Thanks for prompt answer Ian.
I will send a mail to John.
Nice picture and buck by the way...is that you with the big smile ??

I have been trough Wicklow Mountains a couple of times, a landscape filled with history and drama. Especially the area around Glendalouch.

It surprice me though that there is so quiet about hunting oportunities in Ireland compared to Scotland for instance.

I can confirm that the island is crawling with fallow and sika deer. I was able to shoot 7 in a long weekend last year, outside of the rut!

In addition, the leases are priced very competitively, deerstalking being a new sport in Ireland.

Yep, thats me with the happy grin! Although not the biggest stag in Eire - the stalk was one I will not forget!

The stag was taken at very last light after sneaking across an open plain and up the side of a hill - right under his gaze. Eventually, he came right on down the hill towards me - picking his way through black heather patches. He was only really visible in silhouette against the lighter coloured grass.

His tips seemed so big and white against the background, that I was not sure that I didnt have a gold medal beast - in some respects it was a pleasant surprise to find he had got smaller after being grassed! Smiler

Like BogHoss, the sheer number of deer in the area meant I returned to the UK having taken a total of five sika in a few days.

Highly recommended - I was over there with a couple Norwegian friends - and we will all be back next year!

I recall that John was complaining that costs of equipment in Eire were very high. I think that buying online from the US is likely to be the cheaper option. Or consider buying thru the UK.

Is there any model of scope that you are particularly interested in? I have bought equipment here at much less than half the price you have to find in Norway!

Ian...
I was thinking on a new scope on my ZKK 601 in 308 Win. The rifle is mostly used for roe stalking at dusk and dawn, and I really dont need a variable scope.
It my also double up as a ok rifle for Red stag in Scotland if my wallet permits Smiler
Heavens know I have the urge !!

The scopes I had in mind was the Carl Zeiss Diavari Z 8x56, Swarovski Habicht 6x42, or Smith & Bender 8x56, preferably with reticle German # 4
The price in Norway are more or less GB£600.

UK might be at better source than Eire ??

All very nice glass that will suit the job well!

My local dealer advertises :

Swarovski 6 x 42 PF £449

Zeiss Diatal Z 8 x 56 £426

Schimdt & Bender 8 x 56
(German assembled) £535
(Hungarian assembled £359 - 1 inch tube / £389 - 30mm tube

The Schmidts assembled in Hungary offer excellent value for money, use all the same lenses & components and offer the same superb optical clarity!!
Do the currency conversion and its not too tough a decision!

Can I be of help? Wink

It has been a long time since I lived in Dublin, so do not be surprised if they are not all there.

Patrick Cleere and Son, is where I bought my first shotgun. I hope he is doing well and still there.

Best of luck.

Paul.
