I need to get my Portuguese hunter's licence but the exam & interview here in ONLY in Portuguese which I don't yet speak and I've just now been told they won't accept a UK DSC1 but will accept other European hunting licences such as from France, Spain or Germany (etc) as an alternative. Do any of your countries grant hunting licences to other Europeans who are only English speakers and if so, how do I get one? My only other languages are all African based so none of them will help! LOL!

Steve, Obtaining a hunting permit in France is a fairly complicated and somewhat lengthy process, not too distant from the French driver's licence system (which is an expensive pain in the ass). As far as I know it is in French only. I think I had to study a little harder than for my Master's degree, but I did get a good score (99%) which peeved me since a 100% score gets you invited to a Presidential hunt at Fontainbleau or someplace. The French hunting permit is about one-half hunting regulations and laws, one half questions similar to how many eggs are in a typical clutch of red grouse and the third half contains questions similar to how to climb a farmer's fence with a shotgun. I don't remember any questions about hunting, but I passed the exam about 15 years ago. Fortunately the permit has no expiration date. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Steve, laws in Germany are not simple, too. If you only want to hunt for a couple of days in Germany you can get an 14 days hunting license. This is not too complicated. To get a full hunting license you have to make exams, shooting and interview in German. The only exception is if you are Member of UK or US Forces and live in Germany or you have a license from another Country which is of equal quality. Do you really want a permanent hunting license?

Steve, it's quite difficult to get the german hunting license BUT we do have a foreigners hunting license. You might be able to get one of these with your UK DSC1. Maybe the Portuguese will accept this? Let me know if you want to try this and I'll see if that's an option. Dennis

Steve, Obtaining 14 day Temporary German Hunting License on a DSC1 is a breeze; I've done it quite a few times for UK Nimrods who hunt with us. The License specifically states "Temporary 14-Day Foreign License" on it though and that may be a major Show-Stopper for your local Portugese issuing Authorities. We are confronted with this often; the Germans are quite willing to exchange various EU Member State Hunting Licenses & Sport shooter's Firearms Permits based on list of Member States with reciprocating agreements. Obviously your Portugese Issuing Authorites have an agreement with the Member States you've mentioned. I know it works with Denmark, Sweden & the UK. The largest hurdle is that they base the qualification on Permanent/Temporary Residence Permit & Work Permit; and issue the new documents while returning the original Shooter's/Hunter's License/Permits back to their home country during their stay abroad. Currently it is quite vogue to obtain a German Hunting License via short, intensive several week long "Crash Courses" that are offered by accredited institutions. They are fairly spendy but nevertheless deliver the required results. I do not know any of these Hunting Schools that offer an English cirriculum. Cheers, Number 10

Gerry Thanks for your help with this buddy. Is 14 days the longest duration they'll issue a temporary permit for?

There used to be an option for longer permits (1 or even 3years, I think?). I'll call our hunting office tomorrow and see if they have infos for me.

Steve, As far as I'm aware there is only a 7 & 14 day Foreign Temporary License; the 1 & 3 year option is for residents. Cheers, Number 10

That sounds just the ticket if they still issue them!

The 1 and 3 year are also an option for (some) non residents. (like the Dutch)

Shakari, you only get a "Tagesjagdschein" which give you the permission for 14 days. You need to have an hunting insurance to get this. It is possible to get one for a complete year and up to three years but then you need to proof that you had done a similar course in European country. Cheers, Hendrik Here are all details (German only) Ausländerjagdschein

To be honest, I don't know. Problem is that every region handles it a little different. But in all lists I saw England was not mentioned. So I am not very optimistic here. End of March I have some lessons with lawyer who is specialist in Hunting Laws. I will ask him.

Bad news Steve: I talked to the guys here at the local office and they do not accept the DSC1 for the 1-3year license. You can get a 14day license. The only british license they accept for the 1-3year foreigner hunting license are those issued by british forces in Germany. Countrys (sometimes only certain regions) that qualify for 1-3year foreigner hunting license are: Belgium Bulgaria Denmark Italy Croatia Luxembourg Norway Poland Sweden Switzerland Hungary Czech Hunting club of belgium forces in Germany Hunting Comission of british forces in Germany The authoritys can decide about the qualifications on an individual basis. But that will be very difficult and the office here told me they will never accept any qualifiaction from outside of european Union. Maybe one of the members here knows an office that is a little bit more liberal? Cheers Dennis

Steve, if Portugal would accept the 14 day German license that would be the way to fly. If Spain had a license you could get that may even work better. Each country has their own rules, made by man, to make life complicated for other men Best of luck, am interested in the outcome. Doesn't help your case, but US Forces in Germany can also be included in the list of Auslaender Jagdscheins for 1 and 3 years, Waidmannsheil, Dom. -------- There are those who only reload so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload. I belong to the first group. Dom ---------

I can certainly ask if they'll accept a 14 day licence & convert it to a permanent Portuguese one but would be surprised if they will. I'll post the news when I have it. Does anyone have a scan of the 14 day German licence they could email me please?

If you want to go for the French permit, here's the link to the official government website on the subject. While it might be more practical for you to learn Portuguese, perhaps you already have a good base in French? http://www.oncfs.gouv.fr/Le-pe...mis-de-chasser-ar659 _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Hi Steve, I think I can obtain for you a licence for Castilla y León (Spain), I have done it in several times for American and Mexican Hunters. As you know there aren't an unique licence for Spain, each region has its own laws and licence. Let me ask for it, I'll give you an answer as soon as possible.
