I was thinking about roe deer hunt this spring. I know very little about hunting them so I though I would ask for some advice. I really want to go to Scotland. I would like to take my girlfriend on this trip as well. I really not looking for huge trophies, but good representative animals. I got a quote from a booking agent for a 5 day hunt (bed and breakfast) which included 2 roe deer for $2800 for me and $650 for my girlfriend. Additional roe deer would be 165 pounds each. I have no way of juding if that is a reasonable offer or not. What do you think? Could you recommend any booking agents to help organize this hunt? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi TRL For $3450 you can shoot as many roe deer as you like for as long as you like on my bit of land. It would go along way to paying for all the trees they eat. Seriously there is a lot of good quality stalking available all over the UK at much lower prices than that. Give me a PM. Mark Hunting is getting as close as you can, shooting is getting as far away as possible.

TRL, I hate to say this, but you're being charged "Rich American" rates... 5 Nights in a decent B&B for two should be around £250 In Scotland I wouldn't pay more than £200 per day for Roe bucks at the very tops, and for that I would expect a chance of a buck a day although that would include non trophy animals. Many places are now charging a sliding scale for trophy's, but I have always tried to avoid those places. If I booked 5 days stalking, I wouldn't expect to pay anything to take a none shooting member of the family along other than direct expenses like the B&B. It is usual as well for the stalker to boil out the heads as a European skull mount before you leave and that is normaly part of the fee, but is perhaps something to remember when you leave a tip at the end of the hunt.... So taking £1 = nearly $2, I wouldn't pay more than $2500 for you both, and that would include probably 3 or 4 bucks as well.. I suspect if you shopped around you could probably shave another good bit of money off that as well... regards, Pete

Pete E is right you are being charged silly prices i live in the north east of england and do all my roe deer stalking in scotland and would not expect to pay half that for five days buck stalking if i am not interested in trophys

Sounds really expensive to me, if you can wait until August I would recommend coming to Sweden for roebucks. You would probably get away with less than half the sum you mensioned. No offense to the scottish roebucks..

Infact to put it in perspective i have just been to the isle of arran i was there for five days stalking red stags through the b.a.s.c stalking scheme their was no trophy fees at all and it is some of the best red stalking in the country even if it is hard going but it only cost me around £900 including five nights accomadation and meals and travel I know it is not roe buck stalking but it might put some prices into perspective p.s I dont know if you live outside the uk if you can become a member of the b.a.s.c

Gentlemen, I am very interested in this type of hunt for 2007 and find the difference in prices quoted very interesting. For 6 days stalking and two red deer, touring and accomadations I was quoted over $6,000 for my wife and I with Mike McCrave. Can you provide other contacts for Scottish red deer and roebuck stalks along with tours and B&B? Many thanks. Bwanamrm, To give you an idea, for that kind of money I can go shoot 9-10 Stags in Scotland with no day fees being charged. Some places charge an outing fee but where we go he doesn't. just a flat £300 ish per stag. Obviously you have accomodation to deal with but all in for a week it is less than the trophy fee on a stag for the B+B. Rgds, FB

When I toyed with the idea of taking people out I was going to charge:- Outing fee £100 per day = £600 Non medal but good 6 pointer £250 = £750 Bed and Breakfast £20 per person = £240 Rifle/ammo £5 per day = £30 No charge for observer but success rates are likely to be a little lower. So six days with 3x 6 pointers would have been £1620 and change. Local pub does great food but you would probably want a car to fill in the middle of the day. For various reasons I can't offer it but it should give an idea of what is possible. You do need to ensure that if you book with a one man band semi professional (as I might have been) that your expectations are realistic. Scottish forestry can be notoriously difficult to stalk for roe bucks and not that beautiful (think line upon line of conifer) so you also need to check the make up of the ground. Season is key - if you are wanting a shoulder mount you will want full summer coat which will mean from end of May (the Scots can confirm or not if this is the case) if not you are likely to want the antlers free of velvet which is about mid May to be certain. The rut at the end of July/August is the premier time, late June/early July can be quiet as can immediately post rut. If there is arable September can be good as the fields are cleared and stubbles (fleetingly) appear - the starts and ends aren't quite so tiring either. It would be advisable to practice shooting off sticks to make the most of your trip.
