The first two photos show the "whig" type of deformation, which is most common on roe deer. It is sometimes seen on moose too, but that is even more unusual.

Last night I spent 14 hours in a blind, waiting for whitetails to appear. Saw a couple, but didn't get a shot at any. Last one to appear about 4 am was probably a roe deer, but I can't be sure. It was too busy going somewhere else than my feeder. Roll Eyes

I think that the condition comes from a lack of testosterone to harden the antler so often the deformation can blind the buck making it difficult for him to feed. I thik the growth is ofeten prone to infection too.

I know a stalker that has a waiting list of german clients ready to pay £5k to shoot a perruque...

I've never seen one but if I did I'd be rolling the poor fella over quite rapidly, cos it can't be a happy life.

yes, the perruque formation occurs from castration (from disease or traumatise).
I have seen some, in museums and private collections (and I have myself one from germany, shot in far 1909) but never see one live.
And never see(real or picture) one big like this one.
Sure a trophy as this is s Less common than one 140-150 CIC gold medal, maybe 5000 euros looks many money but we know that a big medal head can cost this price...

Some stalkers like to hunt "oddballs".
Friend of mine had a Gemsbok in SA which had one horn that pointed straight down, and he was saving that for a German client who was will to pay a fortune to hunt it as something different, to me all it is,is a proper cull animal.
each to their own I suppose.
