It happened yesterday, as I was in the Waitrose walking in the meat isle. They were lined up like 4 of the nicest little birds I've seen in awhile. And since I haven't gotten any in awhile I succumbed, yup I'm here to say that I was weak.

I bought four pigeons that someone else killed!!! They are in the oven right now, the first game I've bought and not killed myself.

Kind of leaves me with a hollow feeling....but they should still taste good.

One day last year, my wife came home from Sainsbury's with venison steaks. She set them in front of me in a very pointed manner.

Felt great, not.....

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Well the pigons were pretty good!!

Grizz I bought a nice roast a while back, the best I could find, and I cooked it with all the tender loving care I was able to. I can say with some authority (after having only one roast) that British Beef sucks.

I guess I've been spoiled growing up eating the best beef in the world and really what was I expecting? If I want to threaten the kids I say that I'll make roast for supper. I'll give it another try in awhile but I can take the skankiest deer I've shot and it will be better than the beef I had, hell even tough old moose is better. There my diatribe is over!

cheers all

Chef,

Beef in the supermarkets is generally very poor. However if you have a decent butcher nearby then he will ofen get a rib in for you and hang it in his chiller and age to your preference.

I did get it at a butchers, I'll have to try a different butcher. I'm just used to beef being finished on grain so it's lucious and tender. The cickens here are actually better than I've been getting in Canada.

Chef - I think you'll find the amount of marbling is generally much lower on this side of the pond.

As Bog says marbling is generally not desired here in the UK by the majority of shoppers.

I know what you mean as we got to a couple of spots in London for USDA and canadian corn finished steaks that are just excellent.

An alternative might be a morning walk round borough market on a saturday or a search on the internet for some home delivered options directly from specialist farms.

Goodmans on Maddox Street is excellent. It is worth getting the 800g to 1.2kg steaks to share as they bring them carved to share.

Also the 12hr braised beef ribs at the Grosvenor Grill are superb if you had a few too many the night before!! Wink
