I have been asked to get a price for cutting a hole in the back of a land rover 90 series roof for the purpose of night shooting.

I have done this on 2 land rovers in the past, in my opinion it is the best option for night shooting, 360 degrees view, high up (safe shots), with the use of an adapted roof rack converted into a shooting rail this offers a very stable shooting position. Downsides are - can be cold! and in high winds position does rock a little!

Has anybody got any experience of putting a skylight into a vehicle, I am after costs etc, do land rover offer this service?

Does anyone know where I can buy a secondhand large flat sunroof to put in?

Cheers

Go to one of the windscreen repair places, they usually fit sunroof's to cars, they may be able to point you in the right direction. Getting a second hand sunroof may be a cheap option but they are not that expensive to get a new one, the buggers do leak. I siliconed the one in my LandRover shut, the only way to make it watertight. Keep away from the main "stealerships" it would undoubtably be an expensive experience.

Hope this helps,

John

NW,
try a local weld shop, mike and paddy have had good
lids knocked up in checker plate, they fasten up good and proper. the cutting bit is easy, especially in a land rover.

still wasn't cheap though, im sure it was in the region of £200 - £300

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I have gone the chequer plate route in the past but would rather go with a large sunroof this time, partly so that I can part open it in the "summer" months when picking up for ventilation for my dogs, but also to keep the value of the vehicle up if the estate comes to sell it.

But I might go back to the solid tin lid option.

Nightwalker,

One of the shooting magazines carried an article on doing this a few years back. Rather than use a standard sunroof, I seem to think they used a skylight meant for a mini bus or small coach as it opened fully and gave more room...I have a feeling the guy was charged about £800 for item and fitting and that was no doubt why he was trying to get some cash back by writing about it!

Don't some of the SWB Frontera's have some sort of large removable roof panel over the back?
Perhaps a visit to the scrappy & some careful cutting could furnish the panel and frame ??

Regards,

Pete
