I have subescribed to Shooting Gazette for some time, but I am not pleased with it. To much social events and to much clay shooting. I should like to read more about subjects like pigeon shooting and roe deer stalking.

Is Shooting Times a better alternative? Do you subscribe to it?

I miss the old Countrysport (edited by Tony Jackson I think), in particular when Archie Coats was still amongst us and wrote for them. It gave up to date information of the Scottish salmon fishing as well. Well, that magazine have been gone for 15 years I think... I guess I am growing old and conservative.

Regards,
Martin

the shooting times is"nt bad, and it"s more "field" oriented than some mags which are full of clay shooting and ads for paintings of dogs!
i"ve cut down on the number of mags i buy, as the cost ads up, especially with those that come out weekly. i do still buy the shooting times occasionally, as it leans towards pigeon shooting/wildfowling and stalking. the articles are"nt very deep, but they sometimes have the odd useful tip on decoy patterns, etc.
since i stopped working in an office, i don"t get as much time to read them anyway!
you can always try the shooting times and see if you like it.
good shooting.

I get the ST, Gazette and Sporting gun, and would say that sporting gun probably has the best articles if you want to focus on the sport itself rather than all the political stuff going on at the moment.

It has lots of features on pigeon shooting and wildfowluing with the odd bit on staking each month. Some of the other publications are tending to appear a little purist these days if that makes sense.

Martin, you're not the only one who misses the "old" shooting times. Sadly there's too many yuppy journalists and too few "dirt under the fingernails" writers. Laurence Catlow is the best read in shooting times now.
Best idea is to buy back copies from 60/90's to enjoy the old magic- often seen on e-bay.
I've just changed back to sporting gun from shooting times, (takes a long lead in time) small ads are good in sporting gun!

Trans,

Agreed on that. how many "Advertising" reports on greta high bird shoots can you read??

"Tall pheasants were put off a high bank to proovide testing shooting along the line.....etc.... Oh and everyone was a lolly old chap..."

Nice when you are under them but definately a case of "you had to be there..."

Sporting gun is definately the way forward.

I always subscribe to the Shooting times - mainly because I renew the subscription at the CLA game fair each year and get a free bottle of Port. This year I also blagged a free signed copy of the ST's cartoon strip book "Dog".

I used to get all the mags there were every month but decided now just to get ST because its weekly and I'm interested in the latest shooting news - although I must agree that the Sporting Shooter is also a good read.

I can't bear to read any of them, most of the stalking articles are filled with errors by journalists who seem to have been doing it for about 2 months.

Sounds grumpy but it's a pet hate of mine.

I agree with 1894. They are just garbage. The American ones like Rifleshooter are better but then the articles are written around which company has provided them with free equipment etc.

The worst one in the UK which is absolute dirt is Shooting Sports (hope that is the correct title) anyway it is the one with Pete Moore in it - he should be called Pete Mooron - he is an absolute tool.

I agree that many of these rags are garbage.
-Either they cost a fiver and center around cigars/port/bronzes of pointers and very little actual shooting material...I nearly expect a notice saying 'no animals were harmed in the making of this magazine' on the front cover!

-or they contain articles with really basic info seemingly geared to newbie hunters.
