Well there shouldn't be too long until the roe start to rut. Over the past few weeks there has been some pretty impressive chasing as big bucks have become intolerant of their smaller brothers.

With last winter having been so mild, trophy sizes may well be impressive.

The forum appears a bit quiet over the past few weeks - how about a roe buck photo competition with a closing date to take account of some of our Continental bretheren's less generous roe buck seasons (I'm thinking Sweden here for example) I would think that composition would be the main criteria not trophy size and that we would have to agree an impartial panel of judges!

Maybe the winning photo could be used as the header for the forum

Things just starting to happen now!just witnessed the big boys chasing out the young bucks, one less now!
I don't know what other stalkers policies are, but we shoot as many of the young bucks "now" as the old bucks are constantly chasing them away and then towards the end of the rut before the big bucks dissapear we try for them!

We have to run a shoot on sight policy but given the choice the weakest are always first to go.

Hunting is getting as close as you can, shooting is getting as far away as possible.

Hey guys,

For the right bribe I can be an impartial judge!! Wink

seriously, I have no access to roe nor any inclination to get out of my bed in the mng just to photograph them... barely to stalk them!! so I'm happy to play.

We went stalking last night. My son-in-law missed a very nice buck (he wanted him too bad and shot too fast). I saw 4 does and 2 bucks. They seem to get nervous already (I also heard several barkings), so rut could be in advance this year.

Mouse!

Nice buck, long front spikes on the antlers, is that the norm around the parts where you hunt?

Could it be a trademark for the bucks of the more open land?

In Östergötland where I grew up, the bucks could have big antlers but they never had those long spikes at the front, serious wood land bucks.

no not a norm at all, it may be found anywhere (rare tho) here is a pic of a roebuck from a guy next door (northern parts - close to Austria), that was taken in the woods early this year:

- that's what I like with roebucks the most - the variety that their trophies comes in, you just have to take a great amount of time in a search for nontypical guys and you will find them - they are out there

Picture of a rather typical Swedish roebuck, the areas that are and have been managed for some time here in Sweden will deliver better trofies but this is sort of standard.

Wee - Montero was that guy on steroids Smiler - interesting

Here is one typical roebuck from our places - 6 pointer, length of the antlers ~24 cm, weight of the trophy app 250-280 g - all together app 80-85 points:

...tho this year I have set my sights on this one (left one) - it is a young buck 2-3 years old in an area with many better bucks - pic (bad one - close up) was taken in the spring but I am keeping him for the rut:

However - rut is rut and who knows what we might stumble upon Smiler

Just thought I would add a couple of English roe to the list.

These are the results of a 2 day trip for myself and Millwall, down to the Somerset levels.

The roe below should go bronze, and provided some heart stopping moments for Mill wall after the shot.
All said and done, a beast well recovered.

The other beast was stalked early one morning on a very beautiful farmland location. He had a doe in his company already , and stood his ground when confronted.

The cape is in fantastic condition, and will act as a donor for a silver head that i want to have mounted.

Took my first Roe buck of this season early Thursday morning down in Wiltshire.

Also heard a doe calling, the rut is truly starting.

I will have to squeeze another trip in next week.

This was the best beast from 2006 for me.

I had it measured at the club BBQ this summer and it went silver.

the exact dimensions were :

It weighed 505 grammes with a volume of 165 cubic cm., and achieved 121.18 CIC points.

Average antler length was 24.35 cm

We have a few more to rival this on this year. Hopefully I will be able to post one in the near future.

Cheers

Hunting starts august 16 here in Sweden, to better my chances I took some time yesterday to build a few stands to improve the shooting, not really the hunting.

I made three of those.

One good thing is that the fox season starts om the 1 of august here, I will then have a good reason to get out there.

My target is 3 foxes before the 16,

Enjoy.

Thought I would make a contribution seeing as though it appears the rut has started.

Caught up with this nice buck after Griff and I were watching him for 2 hrs plus before he presented a shot. There were approx 4 does plus fawns which we were watching and he was actively chasing a couple of the does so we kept seeing a flash of orange zapping around in the conifers closly followed by another flash of orange.

He eventually came into a couple of clearings and finally presented a shot. He fell victim to my trusty 75 in .308 using 125 grn BT's close to last light.

For us in the UK the weather is definately having an effect. I suspect a lot of activity is taking place at night when the wind has dropped.

Going out in rain and wind in the rut just doesn't seem right Mad

Have shot one big buck so far that stopped to the call after chasing a doe like an Exocet, like an exocet. Again it was near last light when the wind had dropped despite a nice warm day all day.

Very few crops of the fields either Frowner

Yup sure was - the way we hunt here all the hunting is a game management type. In general one earns the number of the trophies by amount of work he has put into managment in the previous year and you can get up to 3 trophies per year - you can shoot 3 trophy roe bucks or combine trophies with other game - with many different trophy game here (mainly roe deer, red deer and chamois) you have a fair chance to get one of each every year, however bucks like the one on the pic ( 1 year old with average spikes length less than 10 cm and weight less than 14 kg) don't count as a trophy so you can shoot them as much as there is a quota left...same goes with all other nontrophy game - boars included...

btw was roe buck calling yesterday and look what came by hillbilly :

Smiler it is a cub from this year - one of two with their mother behind - they just passed through and the photo was taken in a hurry...but just as they passed the roe buck came after them - checking if they left the area (he was kinda pissed off - made some scratches on the ground right on the trail of the bears).

Regarding calling devices - I use this one:

but IMO the main point is to be on the right spot at the right time and any call will do...old folks here use beech tree leaf - but it takes a lot of practice.

Well today it's absolutely flat out. Bucks rutting so hard you could call, whistle, bark and shout hello as loud as you could and all they will do is carry on following that scent.

Yesterday I was chased by a randy 6 pointer in the middle of a 100 acre wheat field.

Hopefully bucks will start coming to the call as things calm down a little.

Lots of buzzards this year.

Hi Mouse, yeeeahh he seems like a good candidate for "-lets wait a year and see what h´ll look like"

I am personally really fond of the curvature of the spikes.

I was out hunting for foxes last night, we saw one, never got a shoot at him though.

Best regards Chris

Mouse,

this was a good job done by your dog, congratulations! We can see in your friend's face that he feels indeed relieved about the animal being recovered. I consider that the next best thing after hunting yourself is to help a friend to hunt something or participate in the recovery of wounded game.

Yesterday evening I had my first buck this year attend very well to my calling, I even used the same little "Blatter" from Waffen Fankonia shown above. I had sneaked towards this stand overlooking some old fruit orchards, high meadows and bushes and started to call very carefully some 30 minutes later. I had not yet finished the 4th call when some turmoil started in a swampy spot about 50 meters away, then, someting started to approach which I only saw by the movement of the nettles.

Some of you might remember the movie "Jaws" where the "big white" attacks just underneath the surface, not visible but pushing a big wake in front of him. It really looked the same the way the nettles moved. I thought that the best thing would be to get ready, raised the rifle, the scope was set to 6x, I cocked when he rose his head for the first time only 20 meters away. It was a fork on one side, a three point on the other, somewhat over ears length and exactly what I was allowed to shoot by the lease holder. I don't like neck shots but this time there was no other choice. The 9.3 mm bullet from the Blaser B95 dropped it on the spot, I should have used the .22 Hornet barrel, the K95 in 6,5 mm which I most enjoy to use for this kind of hunting was on loan with a friend who also succeeded to drop an even nicer buck some 500 meters away later that evening.

Monday evening, my son-in-law Christopher shot his first nice roebuck, hereby concluding a 2-month chase (7 outings) and a previous miss induced by buck fever. Being a young hunter (3rd. licence), he had only shot 2 yearlings so far. He's beaming...
