Not quite big game hunting perhaps but this seemed the best place to ask this: Does anyone have any experience of the Sako Super Range ammo (either 123 grain or 102 grain) and, more importantly, does anyone have any idea of the approx price per 50 round box? Quick edit to add that I'm talking about 308 ammo. I can only find it listed on the web with a price in one place and the web page appears to be in Greek or similar so not ideal for giving me some idea of the UK price :-)

Coaroach, I shoot Sako Ammo in my 243, the 90gr game heads. they shoot very well in my rifle and I've not had any issues with them to date. I used the Sako Super Hammerheads for a while in my 308, and the rifle just didn't like them. I turned out to be the powder that the rifle didn't like. However I shot probably about a dozen fallow with the 168gr (I think) heads and all were well killed, but I had a huge ammount of meat damage. A freind has shot the Sako 308 round loaded withthe barnes-X and he is very happy with it Rgds, FB

Not relevent maybe - however I used 180gn (?) Super Hammer Head in my 30 '06. Accuracy fine, excessive meat damage relegated that batch of ammo to the cabinet. Believe the bullet has been redesigned now, could be I was not the only one complaining! Rgds Ian Just taking my rifle for a walk!........

Just to mention something else with the SSHH. Of the deer I shot with it, from 15yds to 120yds, I recovered about 4-5 bullets and all had the core seperated and massive fragmentation along the bullet channel. Rgds, FB

Interesting replies, my one practical experience with the 123 grain Sako, on a red hind, saw considerable meat damage and an exit wound the size of my hand. I was considering the light target ammo for reduced recoil when on the range plus the brass is good should I decide to reload. Sako is claiming it is inexpensive but as yet I can't find anyone who can tell me what their definition of inexpensive is, I fear it may differ from mine :-) Until I start reloading I'm going to look for a hunting load for my rifle and liked Sako just because they have a 123 grain hunting load which would be ideal (accepting the limitations discussed) for hinds and maybe even roe. I only have a 308 and would rather not add another rifle.

Caorach Pray why do you want to use 123gn over 150?? Mark Hunting is getting as close as you can, shooting is getting as far away as possible.

My thoughts as well! It gives a good trajectory, comfortable retained energy values and seems to be meat friendly. I hand load to around 2750fps with a non premium SPBT and get a nice combo of accuracy and efficient killing. * Image deleted * Artemis also uses that load in her .308 - with equal success on both Red & Roe. There is a long and complex answer but basically I was looking at the lighter Sako "Range" loads for use on the range with the idea that I would get good brass and could shoot at targets with little recoil should I get through 50 - 60 rounds of a day. It also occurred to me that, perhaps, the 123 grain Sako target ammo and their 123 grain hunting ammo might shoot to near the same point of aim and if this were the case then it could offer a considerable advantage as I know that the 123 grain ammo is certainly suitable for hinds. With this in mind I was trying to get some idea as to how much the Sako "Range" ammo was likely to cost me, hence the initial question. I am aware that there are lots of other options and that 150 grain ammo might do everything I need but I'm investigating the options one at a time and the Sako one happens to be the one under consideration at present.
