Wow, calling foxes is a lot of fun!

Some friends and I have recently started fox hunting in the means of calling.
A friend have just been given the name "King of calling" in our neighbourhood. He have shot two in two days.. Smiler He's actually the brother of the not unknown Mr. G.. Big Grin

Yesterday I went along as a cameraman and we got some pretty decent footage.. Check my
blog for a video clip..

It seems the force is strong in his family!!

Am I right that it sounded like the mating fox call rather than the sqeaky rabbit one? I have one of those and don't seem to be able to get much success with it.

Not really sure, Kiri. It was supposed to be a rabbit/hare distress sound. The call is a Syko Tweety.
I actually don't know how the mating call sounds..
Fox calling is rapidly becomming very popular among hunters in Norway. And it seems to very effective, especially during March/April.

We position ourselves on fields or other big open areas and with the wind in our back. Normally the fox will come towards the wind and you have to shoot quite quickly. Best time seems to be the first hour of the morning. I guess foxes might be very hungry if the nights hunts hasn't been productive for them. Smiler

Sounded more like a goose being strangled than any mating fox.

If you want to see how a real pro does it. Sit yourself down in front of a Warreners (Pat Carey) dvd or Andre Georgescu.

Smiler I guess you're right. I just read about the call and it is suppose to make a bird distress sound.. It worked and that's all that mattered. Big Grin

Thanks for the tip! We need to learn more about this kind of hunting. We're ordering new calls and other equipment soon. Smiler

Waidmannsheil Anders, enjoyed your video. I also enjoy fox hunting and calling, where I'm at conditions are not that great, I like Dec/Jan/Feb with snow and at night, Dom.

Anders, great video that was a big fox here in N.Ireland calling foxes is very popular.
Tophand, the Andre Georgescu videos are fantasic I highly recomend them! as for the warrener dvd biggest waste of money ever! if I shot as poorly as he did the last thing I would do is put it on a dvd never mind charge money for that crap!

Pat Carey (The Warrener) has no need to slap them at any great distance. He can call them closer than anyone I know, and a least they are about UK foxes. Andres are good but Auusie foxes are a different kettle of fish to those in the UK. They haven't had half the neighbours trying to squeak them and then shooting at them and missing for one thing.

As for charging money for crap. Another meat is another man poison.

Some people pay £400+ for 3 outing up a high seat. Now that really is c**p. Wink

I shoot a fair number of foxes by calling and lamping - about 100+ each year - here in the Welsh borders. The call I've had most success with over the last couple of years has been this one:

http://www.foxcalluk.co.uk/about.php

It's variable pitch, so it takes much longer for the foxes to become wary of it. I also use a brass WAM whistle and a Primos squirrel rattle to get wary foxes close enough for a good shot.

During the mating season, I have found the electronic vixen calls to be excellent, particularly the ones on the Callmaster MKII caller. During the cubbing season you could probably sing hymns and the daft creatures will still run in to you...

Adam.
