rifle sling & leupold scope Question

I am looking for the sling that is similar to the ones is used by the competitors on the bi-athlon..
I have a heavy rifle and would like the harness type sling, I have already tried the tactical sling by uncle mike, which is not what I am looking for..
the best way to describe the sling is it is somewhat similar to the straps on a rucksack/backpack, whereby one strap goes over each shoulder ..

Leupold scope?

I have LRT scope, can anyone tell me the size of the allen key that holds the turret caps in place so that i can set them to "0"

many thanks

Griff

Griff,

Attleborough Accessories (http://www.attacc.com/)sell a sling which might be suitable; can't help with the allen key...

Pete

It's probably TORX not ALLEN.

You might ask at the hardware shops for a torx key driver. Leupold makes them and they sell them on gunsmithing websites like www.midwayusa.com and www.brownells.com and www.cabelas.com.
Almost everyone in the states (optics wise anyway) has gone to Torx because they are so much stronger.

Of course I may be wrong, it does happen!

Smiler Griff,

I'm sorry to hear the Uncle Mike's wasn't adequate, based on your description this is exactly where I would have steered you. Sorry, don't know of anything off the top of my head that would be similar (top of head is flat anyway and all my smarts slide off!).

As for the Allen key or Torx screw size, instead of asking us know-nothing's, I'd suggest to simply get on-line to Leupold customer service http://www.leupold.com/
and ask, everything I've ever asked has been promptly and professionally answered and believe me some questions I've asked makes yours look like you REALLY know what you're doing.

Cheers,

Gerry

there was a biathalon style leather sling recently (04) tested in Shooting Sports Magazine, I cannot recall who made it (may have been the people who make the sniper cheekpiece)but it was around £60, it looked quite good, I considered buying one but never got around to it. As far as the scope allen key goes it is small! I have a LR Target, the sizes are not marked, when I finish work, which is where I am now I will measure it and get back to you. Andy

Griff,

There is a leather sling that is becoming very popular in Portugal: it has a zipper running all the way long so you can use it as a single strap sling or as a dual strap sling by simply unzipping it.
And it's not all that expensive.

Griff,

If you really want a nylon one, take a picture of that leather one to a local saddlers and I am sure they would soon run one up to your specification for you..

Griff.

Nice idea for walking up to the hill - and freeing the hands for a drag back down.

One more thought then - have you considered an extra sling swivel placed on the flat of the but? Something to ensure your rifle lays flat against your spine - rather than trying to burrow through your back? Smiler

The Safari Ching Sling can be used in a manner similar to a "backpack-style" rig, plus provide true shooting support.

Ian,

I was thinking the same thing myself...Just recently, I saw a tikka in 9.3x62 with both studs on the "side" for the same reason but frankly I felt it spoilt the looks of the rifle somewhat...

A nicer look idea might be those flush mounted swivel attachments...I have seen them used on rifles in pictures posted here on AR but I don't know if they are available in the UK???

Regards,

Pete

The tool you need to reset your Leupold target knobs is an 0.05" (inches) allen wrench. It isn't a torx.
The Sling you should buy is the Sako TRG 22/42 Sling. It is wider than normal so you may have to work to find wider swivels but it is a superb sling. When properly rigged it can be used as a target sling, standard side shoulder carry or split backpack style. It has rubber threads sewn into it that keep it from slipping. The last time I was in Europe it was only 35 or so Euro's.
Pages 19 and 20 of the following manual show how to rig the sling and how it can be used. Uncle Mike's Police model slings are wide enough to use with it.

http://www.sako.fi/pdf/manuals/sako_trg.pdf

Good luck, You really should check out the TRG sling it's a superb piece and about the only reasonably priced TRG accessory........DJ

Hello,
Anshutz, maker of fine match type rifles, offers various Biatholon type equipment and a source for same would be www.Champion Shooters Supply.com located in New Albany, OHIO. Ask for Karl, owner. He could point you in the right direction if he does not have on hand at his store. Good Luck.

Griff, sorry for delay re size of allen key. I've just measured my allen key for the LRT turrets (also same size as MK 4 turrets) is is .0092" or 2.3mm. The markings on the Leup key say 1/32 allen USA. Hope this helps. Andy thumb

Hi all,
sorry for delay in replying to your input. The rifle I have has been fitted with the John Plaster sniper stock which is fitted with swivels both on the side of the stock and underneath.
Got an e-mail from Leupold regarding the size of the allen key, they stated that it was a 3/32nd allen key which is way to big!!

have just looked at the websites for the slings, but impatience got the better of me and have already bought two butler creek neoprene slings which I hope will do the job.
"damn my impatience"

many thanks

Griff
