Lads, this forum has gone very quiet.

Check in guys, who is out there? How has your season been going.

Quiet here in NI. Have been out a few times and blanked. Hope to bump into a fallow this weekend.

Hope you are all well and busy.

Hi mate - all good here. Have been out a few times but the cover is high and the ticks are merciless!

Have taken a couple fallow prickets in August and looking forward to a week on the red stags in September with my old man.

Just got back from Africa and slotted a fallow Monday last with Boggy!

Work, uni and typing up my hunt report are taking all of my time at the moment.

Also in the process of sorting out a rural retreat for my artist girlfriend.

I'm trying to steeer her towards rural Herefordshire for obvious reasons, but Oxfordshire looks more likely... dancing

Unfinished African hunt report.

P.S now the excuses for not shooting a 12 bore double rifle are getting smaller by the minute Eeker

I'm sorry Peter, I had meant to get the report typed up sooner but it's all become a little bittersweet.

A friend I spent a week with over there passed away the week we got back.

He was an old boy Oom, we called him Uncle, Flip Roberts and one of the founding members of SportJag ZA.

He gave his time up to drive our clueless personages about the place, he took the time to talk about every plant, every animal, every insect I expressed a passing interest in.

He took my stalking with just a camera for fun, though he was in his seventies, and looked after me during the wingshooting.

He was due to come and visit in December.

As I said mate, it's all abit bittersweet.

I'll pull my finger out and get on with it.

You are right about the 12bore rifle. I was having this conversation with Kiri the otherday. We managed to decide that I don't need anything smaller than my 06, in fact what I needed was a bigger gun. I'm no foxer afterall... Wink

im sorry to hear that, but remember you only die if you have truly lived and touched other peoples soul along the way, if you have not lived, you just vanish as nobody will notish or miss you, peace be with him as he at least touched your soul and his memory will live on with you.

Had my first outing of the year over the bank holiday weekend. Spent most of my time putting up a free standing high seat and topping the rides. Had just finished the high seat when a buck came out to check how well I had mown his front lawn and didnt make it back. All in all a bril weekend.

Well not completely bril, I put my swaro's on the car roof and deposited them somewhere in Cumbria. Good weekend if a little expensive.

Currently in Turkey. Just been discharged from hospital after being treated for Lyme disease which I probably caught in Africa.

Make sure you know the symptoms and treatment because you may have to educate your doctor!

No whisky for me for at least a week.

Sorry to hear about Flip. I was watching from the balcony as he very kindly took you down to stalk up to those wildebeasts.
Very agile both physically and mentally for a man of his age.

Brian, et al,

All's well here in The Fatherland.

Just back from the German National Hunting Shooting Championships (in Worpswede by Bremen) where the elusive Double Diamond Gold Pin escaped me again after my trusty Winchester 101's upper firing pin broke on station 2 of the Skeet Event (last event, we'd already shot the Rifle Disciplines & Trap).

Managed to finish using a team Buddie's Weatherby which was @3/4" too short and missed 2 of the last three birds! Ugh!

Roll Eyes

Rewarded ourselves (the Agony of Defeat) by hopping in the car and driving 7 hours to the Czech Republic where joined 18 others on Sunday for a 490 Duck weekend! (Used my Remington 1100).

tu2

All-in-All a good weekend despite the missing 10 points I needed for Glory.

Busy now preparing for an 11 day jaunt in 2 weeks through Eastern Germany for Roe, Fallow, Reds, Wild Boar and Mufflon - can't wait.

dancing

Net, still here; although "On Standby" due to Hunting & Shooting opportunities - but isn't that the way it should be?

Big Grin

Gerry, sorry to hear of your pain and suffering, you have a hard life.

The forestry people just clear felled a big block of timber on one of our Fallow patches, seems to have displaced the resident deer. Blanked again this weekend.

Sika are next weeks target.

Trapper, if yopu caught lyme's disease in africa it's probably riketsia - i think not sure of the spelling I had it myself when I went to Africa, just a word of warning, if you're still on medication you might want to stay out of the sun as it can make you photosensitive.

I've had a good season - shot my biggest roe to date of the plot I shoot on, but have been busy getting married and moving house and all the boring things that must be done in life at some point.

I fly home tonight but will use my last day in Turkey to experiment.
I intend to make a small pinhole in a piece of card and stand near some topless beauties on the beach holding the card at arms length.
If you are correct I should end up with a picture of them upside down on my bod!

Seriously though, the blood test ruled out Rickettsia and there was no eschar so Lyme is prob right. I'll get my own doc to check.

No booze though and I'm fishing in Ireland next weekend. However will I cope?

Sounds like it was probably lymes then, I know when I got bitten I had about 7 infected bites on my hips and at least 50 eschars on my calf, they stopped counting when they got that high, that'll teach me not to wear a tick repellant. The meds they gave me for outside of hospital made me very photosensitive, if I even went in the sun I broke out in a cold sweat that felt like my whole skin was on fire.

It's been a bit mad here as work has taken over the last few months. You know it is bad when staff in airports start recognising you!! I managed to get most of it sorted before the hunting seasons starts so now I can get involved in the good stuff a bit.

I spent just over 2 weeks in RSA shooting game birds and wildfowl along with a small pile, (more of a mound) of plains game. back now for the Fallow and birds. We had our first day on partridges yesterday as part of a dog training day. I'm taking Trapper +1 to catch his first salmon on Saturday on the Easkey, (fancy a go Brian?)

Our shooting will start in earnest this month with Ducks and Deer.

Incidentally, it looks like there will be a lot of munties to shoot this year so the AR bash should be a good one. Details are on there way shortly.

Gerry Anders (and others if you fancy it?), it looks like pheasants and fallow on the weekends of 23rd Oct, 13th or 27th Nov or 8th Jan. Let me know what suits? Brian, are you around for some of that?

Rgds,
K

Brian, been quite busy hunting roe buck (two down), pigeons (ok result) and fox calling (not much lately though).
After the reds this weekend and then an attempt for reindeer. Smiler

I need to pay my office a visit every now and then, even though I really have no time for it! Big Grin

Kiri, I'm in!
The weekend in Oct. is booked already as my boss is sending me to attend a caribou workshop in Manitoba! dancing
The 13th or 27th of Nov seems very possible! Let's stay in touch for that one!
Just need to do some shotgun practice, since my pigeon shooting were way out of line.. Confused

Brian,

We are staying in Dromahair at some cottages there. Fishing the bonnet on Saturday evenign but it looks like I'm leaving Dublin on Saturday mng at about 6-30am from the airport after dropping Elaine off. I should be on the river about three hours later.

I'm in the office all day today finsihing stuff off so gimme a call and we can arrange where to meet for a mng session before we go and pick up Dave and Mike.

I was thinking straight out on the public waters or a bash at the seatrout it the tide is right.

Kiri, is this in addition to the AR weekend?

My stalking has been real quiet since the AR weekend in January. I've been getting in regular fishing sessions since spring though. My first real season fly fishing for trout and I'm enjoying it a lot.

cheers,

Hi Stu,

Yep mention was made on the phone of a few guys coming over in October time to roll over some fallow and tie it in with a day on our shoot of driven pheasants. Nothing major and more social than anything. The syndicate charges £250 for the pheasant days but as for the rest of it you can sit in a high seat and put something in the pot if you shoot a deer, if that sounds fair.

Fly fishing is another one of my illnesses... Hopefully we will convert a couple more this week and have some pictures to post on Wednesday!! fishing

Rgds,
Kiri

New member but thought I have to start somewhere so decided to post a reply on this thread.

Had a good roe rut with three grassed, only one to the call though. Not been stalking since the beginning of August as work then a holiday to Texas got in the way. Managed a couple of flights on the foreshore at the very start of the season, shot two greylag on the first then on the second took a young lad who shot three greylags with my gun (I missed my chance), his first geese and his firts kills on the marsh so we were both very happy.

Work looks like it maybe quiet from October to the end of the year which mean I should be out quite alot this autumn/winter.
Richard
