Griff,
the Savage sounds interesting, my 25 is a rebarrelled rem with kreiger set in HS stock topped off with a leup mk4 tactical. I have another long action sendero, which is being "transformed" into a 6.5x284, just waiting for kreiger to do the barrel. Might try this even further out??

As far as reds and 25 go, the same adage applies to all quarry, if they are hit in the right spot, they will go down. I have yet to see an animal that required a follow up with the 25. I use Speer 100 grain boat tail, very accurate and good penetration / expansion.

Griff, as a rider to my previous post, I have just been playing with the Norma ballistics programme on their site. I am running my 25-06 at 3280 fps with 100 g Speer soft point boat-tails (bc .393). The programme shows that at 491yards I should still attain 1000ftlbs, so no problems for Roe IF I was to go that far, which I won't!. The programme seems to be fairly accurate if the bullet drop scale is used. The figures are very similar to my own findings at the range. I also ran it for the 6.5, which I will try to run at 2900fps with Sierra 140 sp boat-tail (bc.495) or equivalent. This shows that at that MV, it will still be attaining 1000ftlbs at 600yds. I'm looking forward to that when it comes back from Rugby!

I have no idea what the performance of either would be at "extended" ranges on Red as I have not shot anything on the hill and the Reds I have shot have all been woodland - no more than 150yards.

Perhaps our friends from across the pond could comment?

If you were shooting deer at long ranges (350-600)and don't rib me with the o'l cliche "thats not a long distance".....

Griff,
sorry, I can't resist ribbing:
600 FEET IMO is a decently long shot at roe deer.
