Greetings Chaps.

l'm postin' this for brother Zaitsev who can't log in at this time, so here's his dilemma...

He asked his local Police Firearms Dept if he could have a 9,3x62 on his ticket (among other things) And l believe he asked that he be cleared for it's use in England for "all species" (fox, deer, piggies etc...)

Now to my way of thinkin' it's an '06 case necked up (don't jump on me about the detail please) and firing a bullet only 30 - 70 grains high end of that,

Well to cut it short they said "NO!"

So..... What's their problem??!!

Have any of you got one on your ticket here, l did know of some chap havin' .375 H&H cleared for here with the reasoning given that he needed to be able to practice on live game pending trips abroad.

lf any of you could kindly provide any info that may help we'd appreciate it.

Regards.

Dave.

Boils down to what I posted in the thread you have linked to.

Request permission for the 9.3 for use on 'larger species of deer' as per the relevant para mentioned in the guidance.

However, you are retained by the landowner to control other vermin and would not wish to find yourself facing a fox and not being able to safely take it - without finding yourself 'inadvertantly in breach of my conditions'.

Pigs are only likely to be granted if you have written permission - this could be obtained by contact with anyone offering commercial shooting here in the UK.

There should be no problem if you are legitamtly going to shoot red-deer. You can add fox while deer stalking but its unlikely to be granted as a seperate.
Unless you own a huge amount of land with everything on it, its going to be difficult to get an open license in this day and age. I have deer/fox on my 375 H+H and humane dispatch of sick or wounded animals on my 458 Lott. However they still wont let me have feral goat/fox seperatly from deer stalking or wild boar.
Silly isnt it Confused

Mark

Hunting is getting as close as you can, shooting is getting as far away as possible.

The best option is to get BASC on side to argue the case. It's difficult to put a water tight case forward personally if you're not totally consverant with the legislation which BASC are.

Hi all, I'm now back in AR land.
It seems that my FLO depends on reading the H.O guidance as gospel which isn't really very helpful...
Having read it myself (thanks also for constructive replies guys) it seems that the 9.3 should be ok for deer in this country as the guidance states something like 'once initial good reason has been established then these calibres may be used for deer stalking' As you said IanF the relevant para. I have 30-06 for now and when my cert comes up for renewal I will put the additinal calibre on with a full covering letter. If they refuse I will ask for full reason in writing and take it from there. I don't think BASC would be much use as they supplied the calibre list that is in the guidance in addition to which I do not support BASC for various good reasons which I needn't go into on this thread.

Thanks again fellas

The most important thing you need is written permission from the land owner, stating what species are on that land, then you can start argueing with firearms dept what calibre you want/need.
There is NO legal maximum calibre for shooting ANY deer here in the U.K.Although different licensing depts try to impose some restrictions,375 seems to be a level they have stopped @ for deer.
It`s just down to your individual firearms licensing dept and you to sort out what you want,if you get on well with them you can usually sweet talk them round to your way of thinking.
What area are you in Zaitsev?

This is a copy of the page of the book of 'Firearms Guidance' that the Licensing areas work to. As you can see they are told what each calibre is suitable for:

I understand that you might not agree with BASC but I can tell you that I do have a 9.3x62 for deer and boar and have had since 1999 when it was nearly unheard of in this country (bullets, brass and dies had to be obtained from abroad) My firearms department only acceded when BASC contacted them.

UK use is a good idea if you're going to be using it abroad as you don't want to use an unfamiliar rifle on a foreign trip. I use mine for moose nearly every year and break it out for a few stalks beforehand. I feel that for moose etc it really is a useful tool but it offers little extra for the UK unless you are after the biggest red stag in woodland and can guarentee that shots aren't going to be over 200yards.

Of course it is great fun - I must use it again shortly!
