As I have mentioned here from time to time, I have been on the look out for a small used chiller to hold carcasses at home. A friend tells me he knows of one which is approx 24" (60cm) deep by 36" (90cm) wide and 72" (180cm) tall...We are not sure if this is internal or external measurements as yet, nor do I know if the 72" useable height in the cabinet or overall height... I am sure a 24" & 36" will be big enough for 3 roe does, but I was wondering if it would be deep enough for two fallow prickets/does? Its a while since I have stalked fallow and I can't make my mind up just how much space you would need for a couple of prickets.. Regards, Pete

Pete, Can't help on the width and depth as mine is a walk in! Height is the issue with mine. I'm 6' and can comfortably stand with about 3-4 inches clearance. The bars I hang carcasses on are about eye level, say around 5'10" hanging a gambrel from a short S hook results in pricket noses being on the ground. Heads off is better but necks are very close on a big buck. Roe are fine.

1894, I guessed that the height would be an issue as I recall the bar on a friends chiller was just at the 6' mark and that was a bit on the short side for the larger Fallow bucks.. In my case unless circumstances change drastically, I will not be stalking fallow that regularly and when i do, it will be mostly for does or prickets. With regards depth/width, I am trying to visualise two prickets hanging up...I think they would fit side by side in 36" width but I don't know if 24" would be enough front to back... The unit itself is coming from a fishery thats closing down..My mate has not seen it yet, but is hoping to look it over tonight or tomorrow..I will probably end up buying it just on his say so, as the owner is keen to empty the primise asap... Hi Pete, Sorry no fallow available in my region, so I cannot size them. About chillers, I got cheap facilities. I dealt with chillers providers. When they install new chillers in Supermarkets or Food stores or butcheries, these providers have no use of the old chillers. I got two for a fair price. One, the big is 2x2x3m for 800€, the other 2x2x1m for 300€, both in perfect condition. If you have no luck with the fishery, at your place, I would phone the refrigerating units sellers in the neighbouring, sure You’ll find a nice chiller (may be a little bigger than that You want) for a smart price or for nothing. DJM, Are those measurements correct? Looking at a tape measure, I make that equivalent to approx 48" wide, 55" tall and 24" deep??? Regards, Pete

Assuming they're internal measurements you'll be ok as long as you can cam the door shut. The carcasses are going to be in contact with the walls/door and keen to get out. Mine's 6x6x4, presently has 3 fallow does and a lamb hanging- its tight enough. Guess if carcasses are well cooled in summer prior to going in air circulation is less of a problem.

Pete, I took a day of work y'day and shot 2 (rather big) prickets just for you I will measure them over the weekend. This was arable stalking - I had to stop at 2 as I could not fit any more in the boot. When I collected them I was heartily glad I had stopped when I did - fallow are a lot harder to drag than roe!

DJM, Thanks for that...a chiller that size must have been fairly well packed to say the least, but it does give me something to go on! Regards Pete

Pete, For 2 big prickets you ideally want about 110cm if hung from a bar in line. Like this they will be barely touching (the front legs and neck take up some space) Pushed together I thought 70cm or so, so with a door and a bit of BFI your's should do it.
