There is no legal minimum shot size, you can use an 8 or 4 or 2 gauge if you like, non-toxic shot is required, there are plenty of goose guides in Scotland especially. You're looking at circa £60-80 per morning/evening flight but the good ones are booked out well in advance.

This chap comes well recommended, taking over 1000 geese a year with various clients.

Traditionally it used to be said 1's or 3's for goose when lead shot was legal depending on what the wind was likely to be. Nowadays with the requirement for non-lead shot I have no idea.

However I did in the 1980s shoot a few geese coming in to settle when duck flighting my pond with standard 5's in a 20 bore (lead shot when it was legal) and if you take them in the head at that range (thirty yards and under) they are dead.

Just one point as I am sure you know. It is illegal to sell dead wild geese in Scotland so what you shoot you either keep or give away.

TK,

We occasionally have some big bores in stock that could be borrowed. I'm looking at a couple of ten bores next month for the geese myself as I shoot a few canadas and though it might be fun using a bigger gun.

Wildfowling in the UK is a tough business on many of the southern marshes. Much of the goose guiding in Scotland is inland on arable crops. You will rarely shoot flighting birds in these scenarios as they tend to shoot over decoys, so the big bores are not really in their element here. There is some access to "proper" wildfowling on club marshes, and private marshes which can be great fun if the birds are in and flighting, but that sport is not about the bag but more about being on location.

Shells for the big bores are VERY expensive though so it's not something you would want to use on duck flights where birds could be killed with a 12g!!
