It was a Danish friends significant birthday last weekend and I was invited. The fact that the roe buck season had just opened played no small part in my decision to travel!
I collected my rental car in Billund and had a quick visit to see Kenneth in Ostjyskvaabenhandel in Hedensted.
This shop nearly makes me cry with the size of it ! I mean a rack of lefthanded rifles ! Guess who,s a leftie ?
I eventually tore myself out of the shop and continued up to near Aalborg,my destination.
After the customary beer on arrival Christian asked me if I would shoot him a buck for the freezer. The Voere 243 and a box of Norma was out of the safe rapidly and 3 shots confirmed zero.
5am Saturday morning had me drinking a coffee in the kitchen waiting for shooting time, sunrise to sunset and no excuses.
A couple of hours snooping had shown me 2 bucks,1 in the distance and 1 where no shot was possible. This is a flat country!
So I went in around the duck ponds,a favourite haunt of the roe.Climbing up a small bank I spied movement about 60 meters ahead. The binoculars confirmed a doe and then another.I felt sure a buck wouldnt be too far away and waited a while,a cool breeze was in my favour.
A buck appeared near the does and I started working my way forward slowly, one foot at a time.To my chagrin they fed off under some trees and I lost sight of them.
Then I saw movement and a deer was coming up the bank,a buck but the reeds still made a shot impossible.
I worked my way closer,by now in a right lather of sweat! At about 25 meters at the edge of the reeds I raised the rifle. The buck was dancing around inside my scope!! Several deep breaths,a mantra or 2 and I squeezed the trigger. He went 10 meters and collapsed.

Monday morning had me out on another friends farm on Egholm,an island near Aalborg.I snooped around for a couple of hours but the rape is well grown and I reckon a lot were in there.
I headed off for a quiet, secluded wood which usually has a few roe in it.
I quietly made my way into a high seat. Not quiet enough for 1 buck I suprised about 5 meters away from me,I reckon he was having a snooze. He took off into the wood barking. He didnt raise an almighty uproar so maybe he wasn,t sure himself.
I watched a hare basking in the morning sunshine for a while and some shelduck waddled around for a while,2 grey crows were trying to raid a mallards nest as well.
Suddenly I noticed movement under an oaktree,a buck was grazing the leafs.
I raised the rifle and confirmed the antlers were above the ears.A rule of thumb for a shootable buck.I placed the crosshairs behind his leg and he fell to the shot on the spot.Time for the first Caminante of the day !

Its great having somewhere to go in our offseason !

Well written.
I was there in my head!

Hej Peter ! Det lyder godt !
You asked me earlier how I liked Denmark!A lot !
I enjoy the hunting traditions,Parole before the day,et godt sigtevand! The parade of the bag at the end of the day.The woodcock at the top in a nest of boughs, followed by the roe, cock pheasants, hen pheasants, drakes and ducks all in order of importance.I forget now where the fox and hare lie.
Not forgetting the camaraderie where everyone shakes everyone elses hand before leaving and says.
Tak for idag,Thanks for today.
I must forage around my snaps and post some of a days hunting if anyone is interested.
Might take you up sometime on the beer/stalking or you should broaden the gene pool of your Irish cobs by buying in Ireland some autumn [Sika stag season!!]

sika

please post some pic's from the hunts and shoots you have been at.

hare comes after phasant, and fox is in the end row usually but it changes from shoot to shoot.

i will take you up on the sika in ireland and i might bring a few horses over as well, the horse traffic goes that way now if you can breed them good enough, but please if you are around dont be shy, this is a standing invitation.

best regards

peter
