Last night the wife informed me of her 5 year plan to live in Spain - ideally in the Seville region - and indulge her passion for breeding Andalucian horses. Fine by me, I love the country. Let's go!

But a few question spring to mind:

Will I be allowed to keep my rifles under Spanish law?

And can I reload?

How much would 200-400 ha of land with a farmhouse cost? High land rather than prime agricultural land.

What game animals and birds could I expect to have?

Can Spainish members help please?

Hola Richard

Don't know nothing about horses , I live north of Spain , near 900 kms from Seville , have a few friends more crazy than the horses they have , but not sure they have andlucian/ arabian horses , expenisves ones , sure .

About guns should be no problem to keep your guns and buy here a few more , ( only not allowed semi auto in 308/7,62 ), you can hunt small game and big game no problem we have a good variety of game , sometimes expensive Frowner .
Handloading , it's something comlicated you can reload but powders and primers are almost impossible to find after Madrid attack , you can have up to one kilo of powder at home and if youn travel by car you can transport your kilo from France or UK .

Hope it help

Daniel

And after five years of Spanish weather, you may never go back to damp old Blighty! Invest in some broad brimmed hats, though, the summers are notorious.

I am an American living in Spain. I live 100Km south of Seville on the coast.

I get to keep my guns because of our Standard of Forces Agreement. I doubt that they will extend you the same courtesies as you will not be serving your country's military whilst you are in Spain.

You know there are Andalucian horses in the USA, and they will probably let you own as many guns as you want. You could live in Arizona, New Mexico, or California and experience the same weather and language!!!!!! Just a thought.

If you need some contact information, I live in the area where you are headed. Send me a PM and we'll talk.

Land in Arizona or New Mexico will be much, much more affordable. However, if you can afford California acreage, consider the area around the town of Temecula. That's wide open horse country that hasn't been plowed up for vinyards . . . yet!

Thank you for the intresting replies.

The missus will not be tempted to move to the US, even if a green card was available.

Back to Spain...

If a boar wanders onto my land, does it become mine to hunt? Is a hunter's permit required?

i am english and have lived here for almost 9 years. If you have a UK firearms or shotgun certificate, that can be convalidated in Spain, BUT you still need a medical certificate, hunting licence(each comunidad is different, here in catalunya you only need an insurance to get it, in some places you have to do an exam) and you can then have 6 shotguns and 6 22lr rifles on your shotgun licence, and at the same time, pay a few euros more to get your rifle licence. You can POSSES as many rifles as you want, but only CARRY OR USE 5 at a time. Make of that what you will!

To reload you must do an approved course, buy an approved press and then you will find that you canot buy your 1kg of powder or 100 primers, first cos no-one has any, secondly cos if they have they are not allowed to send it to you !! Please, feel free to send me a PM or better email to julianmb@hotmail.com and i'll try to help with any questions you might have. AND START LEARNING SPANISH, PLEASE!!!!

Regarding hunting regulations, go to

http://www.face-europe.org/

and then choose "hunting in Europe".

The page regarding Spain is not yet online but might be soon.

Deerdogs,

Quote : “you can have up to one kilo of powder at home and if youn travel by car you can transport your kilo from France or UK “ In France only the French VECTAN powder is legal Mad, no choice. Worst, every shooting range makes it clear, no reloading with foreign powder because of insurance and responsibility.

My cousin is breeding Arabian horses in France. Yet Spanish weather and “vida†are far nicer.
Good luck, I wish your dream comes true.

Gun rules are different in Andalucia than where you live. Rifles, shotguns, and airrifles are all limited. But not distinction is made between a rifle permit and a shotgun permit. Every single gun needs a GIA and the wait for each GIA can be enormous.

Kokdyer for the moment Cataluña it's part of Spain and the rules are the same , you need a GUIA for a shotgun or rifle , but to own a shotgun or a rifle it's not the same .
