In Germany

8x60, 8x64 and 8x75 are hard to find. Many hunting shops dont have this cartriges on stock

The easiest way

6,5x57, 7x57, 7x64, 8x57, 8x68 (hard recoil) 9,3x62 (more than 10 different bullets available) 9,3x74R.

The 9,3x64 mostly ony one bullet (19gramm TUG).

The 30.06 is no European cartrigde but every gunshop has it.

I have a steyr mannlicher in 8x68 ,and it does kick a bit sometimes, but its something you can get used to ,Mine has a hard recoil pad which doesnt do much to help, but i dont want to change it .You can use projectiles from 125gr up to 250gr so that just about covers most things !!! i have shot baboon ,impala, hippo, buffalo, wild bull, pigs, donkeys ,with mine .get one with a soft recoil pad if it bothers you .i think its a real good all round rifle

...I have 8x68S and 9,3x62 and both would be mine choice regarding the topic starter...regarding recoil between those two I dont see big difference exept that on 8x68 S is just kinda sharper...so I use 8x68S (62,5 cm long barrel) in open terrain (stalking and waiting hunts) with longer shots and 9,3x62 (50 cm long barrel) in bush for driven hunts and tracking wounded animals (tho you can firmly take shots up to 200 m)...just mine 2 cents...

Im currently dealing with the paperwork of getting a licence for bigger than 8mm rifles and it looks good!
If i get it i will most likely buy a 9,3x62 or even go up to 375H&H as a allround big game rifle with the focus on Moose and Wildboar!
375H&H might be a bit too big thou!

Mouse93,
on July, when I was in Namibia, I tested my 9.3x62 at 300m and 400m
And I made a friend of mine to test a 50cm barrel rifle in 9.3x62 at 300m.
For both the zero of the scope was at 200 meters.
Well, I had a drop of of 30cm at 300m and 80cm at 400, using a 286grs Nosler Partition bullett and a barrel of 55 cm.
My friend had a 35 cm drop at 300m using a 225 grs RWS DK.

On a big animal is a still manageable distnce for a shot, IMVHO, of course.

bye

dead on Stefano...I remember my hunt in Namibia back in 95...my friend brought his 9,3x62 there with hand loaded RWS 19,0 g TUG`s sighted on 200 m and did exeptionaly well just as you said - up to 300 m and I specially remember one shot he made on running warthog 250 m away and hit him right on the shoulder ( he admited later that was a bit lucky one Smiler )...tho here we are talking about europe hunting caliber and there isn`t that bright light there considering most shots taken in the twighlight there is biger problem on judging the trophy on that kinda distance...also most game here (exept from moose, brown bear and red deer ) is smaller than down there so I usually dont take shots on healthy game over 200 m here - actually I took some time and calculate that my average shot distance is just around 80 m Big Grin ...so 8x68S is mostly staying at home...

I can't imagine taking a deer with 8x68. That's ridiculous. But if you focus mainly on moose and boar I would go with 9,3x62.
However I have taken more hogs with the 7x57 (Norma-Oryx) and it was (and still is) an efficient killer.
