Has anyone hunted red deer in Hohenfels, Germany? I am invited to a class I hunt there this fall and wondered what the deer are like there?

Not a bunch of replies. I'm not familiar with the area, is your hunt in connection with the US Armed Forces hunting program?? Our very own "Gerry" has experience with that program, but I don't know if he knows that specific area?? I have seen references to a military area (used for training etc) of the name of Hohenfels. The contact for the military training area Hohenfels seems to be in Grafenwoehr. Grafenwoehr was one of the most sought after locations in the US Armed Forces' hunting program....

If you don't get any replies here, you can always try this forum: http://www.wildundhund.de/forum/. It is a German forum, but they are usually willing to help out - even in English.

I googled the following website up: http://www.hohenfels.de/Landkarte/landkarte.html. If that is where you are going, when are you planning to be there?? If in October, we might be able to hook up for a beer?? (September I'll be in the US).

kodiakisland.....

Our AR mho (Mike) is a real gentleman and very graciously suggested I may have some expereince in Hoenfels.

I'm confused at the word "invited" although this very well may be the case; since these Training Areas are administered by the German Federal Forestry; including the Hunting Rights as are their counterparts Grafenwohr & Baumholder (plus others in Northern Germany in which I do not have any experience with). In one or any combination of these three very large (Grafenwohr HUGE) Military Training Areas you normally apply for a hunting opportunity and are then selected for the planned harvest of a Red Stag (or other game animal) depending on assessed availability of the desired trophy quality. Normally such an offer is not offered unless the desired Trophy quality is "available" for harvest and the potential for a successful hunt considered.

Without going into the Long Way/Short Way of the above; the aceptance of an offer/"invitation" for a Class I Red Stag Trophy will pretty much be just that - you will hunt for and (most probably unless time & Diana are against you) harvest a Mature Red Stag that reflects the traditional German Red Stag Trophy quality (form) & weight (between) 4.5 Kg. to 6.5 Kg. and is at least 12 years old. The numbers of points (tynes) and double-sided crown (three or more tines in the crown) development remains pretty much open.

Gerry
"invited" for lack of a better term. I emailed someone about a month ago saying I would like a class I red deer hunt in Grafenwohr. Last week I got a letter from the bundesforst in Hohenfels for the hunt. It is in German and I read very little (almost none) but could tell I had two weeks to send them money if I wanted to hunt. I talked to my guide (forester?) today in broken English and could tell the hunt is for 5 days in mid September. 4-6kg trophy to be expected.

So far thats all I know, but look forward to the hunt.

Thanks for the info.
Looks like the hunt will be in September. What's the best beer in Switzerland? I'll be in Kandersteg next week and plan to have a few.

Kodiak, I take it you play the national lottery regularly as well?? At least you should, the way things are going your way!! Class 1 stags are not easy to come by!

I figured Gerry would know what this was all about - he is just that kind of guy... Smiler

I'm not quite sure what the best beer in the Bernese Oberland would be - there is a decent one brewed in Luzern, but I forget the name (don't mention anything about getting old). In fact, I have to admit, I like Danish and Austrian beer a lot more than I like Swiss beer Smiler. You'll enjoy Kandersteg, though. It is pretty spectacular scenery.

Weidmannsheil on your stag hunt in September. Now you have to remember to let us know how it went (pictures and all)!

All these adresses in the german "Bundesforst" are excellent adresses for hunting. If you want to hunt for a class I red stag, Grafenwöhr, Hohenfels, Siebensteinhäuser (Nato training area Bergen-Hone), Raubkammer (Munsterlager) and some areas in eastern Germany are the first adresses. I do a lot of tracking wounded stags in the northern Bundesförstämter, the rut in september is the highlight of every staghunter! I`ll wish you a nice time and great success!

In the class I, you can expect a trophy-weight from 6,5kg up, last year I guided three hunters for class I stags: 5,8kg (but very, very old), 6,5 and 7,8kg!

Do you have pictures of any of the class I stags you shot or guided for? I'm trying to get an idea of what size a 6-7kg head is.

Kodaik,
You are much better off getting this hunt in Hohenfels rather than in Grafenwoehr, as the foresters there are much more friendly, and down to earth. If you get really lucky, they'll let you nail a big ol pig after your class 1 hirsch.

Don't forget to bring the foerster a nic big fat bottle of Booze as well.

Murkan Mike
