Hi there

Since my trip down your way, and shooting your moderated rifle the decision has been taken to moderate the 243. A couple of questions came to mind too.

You mentioned that you more often shoot multiples than you did before. I was wondering if the lack of noise causes a change in reaction to the target animal.

I was also thinking of doing something similar to you with the grey partridges as I have just taken on a local lad to do some keepering for me. What sort of pen do you use? and what dimensions?

Hope you and the family are well.

Best regards to all,
FB

I would definitley go down the moderator route. I had a pes fitted to my .243ai and do often shoot multples now. It's especially handy on the lamped foxes now that they are starting to pair up.

FB, the partridge penning is with 3x2 ten foot pen sections. Netted roof, 30 birds to the pen, trickle released after they've acclimatised for a fortnight. Retain 3/4 call birds for a couple of months in an effort to anchor the covey to that location.
They say eggs hatched under a bantem give much better future breeding prospects.
Deer seem somewhat fazed by the moderator, more often than not the survivors will come towards the rifle. Add the fact you are constantly aware of situation due to lack of flip , recoil, bang etc. I seem to have a lot more opportunity to get off un-panicked second and third shots.

Personaly I have not recognised any difference on the multiples front. I shot multiples with the moderator I now shoot multiples without. I shot 4 roe out of 5 (the 5th was a buck)2 weeks ago in the space of 15 minutes on one large field. IMHO the key to multiples is not noise but positioning.

One thing I did notice though. The addition of a big can on the end of the barrel is problematic when you have an aware deer and are on foot. It is much more noticable to them when you unsling and get into a position to shoot.

Just starting to see some organisations insist on the darn things....

Fallowbuck,
have just fitted a Jet Z suppressor in place of the reflex, the difference is chalk and cheese,2/3rds the weight and 1/2 the dia.
As for multiple shots,my observation is "confusion", they do not seem to be able to locate the source of the noise, especially when the noise bouncing back from trees or bankings is louder than the noise from the gun.
