I've been shooting 90g Sako Gameheads in my 243 for about 6 years now to good effect, but given I have all the gear, (probably no idea....!!) I figured I'd try and load for it.

It is used for Fallow mainly from highseats as a guest rifle so I'm thinking of a "sensible" load at around 2850fps ish. The 90gr bullets seem to do the business and most everyone that shoots that rifle is encouraged to shoot for the body so meat damage is a small concern.

The only thing that I will also be doing with it is to use it as a lamping rifle so I think I'll be trying some 58gr V-Max because I like the Theatre of them... Wink

So what do you use?

200yards or under - 100gr hornady RN. Dependable, accurate in a 10twist, expands well at lower velocities, doesn't damage much meat.

I dont use a 243 but V-Max in my 22-250 do chew up foxes big time.
Yeah yeah yeah I am not shooting foxes for the table !
I do have the greatest respect for Sierra Gameking heads, very underated and moderately priced.

I have found the Hornady 87gr Hollow point (not v max) to be very accurate and to do the business on fallow out to 300. I have some that I have dug out of recently deceased fallow that retained between 65 and 70gr of weight. Should be ideal and readily available. I don't think the fallow will notice the lack of 3grs. None of mine have asked for a second opinion..

Gareth

I load the boreing old Nosler 100 Partition in my .243 at a chronographed 2,954 fps. The largest animals shot with it todate are Two Impala males (50kg) and an old mature Blesbok herd management female (60kg).

here are the entry and exit wounds on the Blesbok which was shot cleanly through the lungs and heart:

I find it provides excellent performance on this and lighter weight Australian feral sized game

Just recently returned from Namibia, my load was Varget pushing 95gr Nosler Partitions at just over 2900fps. We did some culling, performed excellent. However, they were not body shots so don't know what the meat damage would have been Wink Waidmannseil, Dom.

You may well find that the 87 Hornady HP and the 87 V-max are interchageable.... That would be naughty.

The old Nosler Solid Base was the bullet that was the forerunner of the Ballistic Tip. It had a conventional lead spitzer nose with the solid base of jacket metal. I have used the 100 grain version of this bullet as my favorite .243 game bullet for years. Nosler still makes it to sell to ammunition manufacturers and you can sometimes buy manufacturing overruns as factory "seconds". I don't know if they are available in Europe.

My wife and I have shot a lot of whitetail deer, she has shot some mule deer and several antelope with the 243.

We used either the 100gr Sierra or the 95gr Nolser Partition.

Both worked perfect.

The 243 kills deer and antelope as good as anything else we have used.

I load either of these three; depending on what's on hand when the loads are assembled; 85 gr. Nosler Partition, Sierra HPBT Game King or Speer 85 gr. SPBT. All excellent to Fallow Deer sized game. I actually favor the Sierra; although between the three there's not any difference in the Post-Mortums I've conducted.

I've Chronographed all three; Sierra's are the speediest at 3304 fps.

Used the 85 gr. Sierra HPBT at last year's AR Weekend, no one noticed anything untowards; including the dead Fallow Deer Doe - that's the way its supposed to be....

Cheers,
