Jimbo#1 has located a Sako 9.3x62 for me but it is located in Norway. Has anyone had experience shipping rifles from Europe to the US? Is it difficult and or expensive? FYI Jimbo#1 has been a great help to me in my continuing quest for a 9.3x62 and Sako parts. My hat's off to Jimbo#1.

I have shipped several rifles from the US -> Europe using FedEx as well as various freight forwarding companies.

I have shipped a couple of rifles from Europe -> US using the regular postal service. At least in Switzerland, UPS does not accept shipments with firearms, that is why I sent it via the Swiss and US Postal Services. I could also have used FedEx, but chose the postal service for price reasons.

For shipment via the postal service, I took down the rifle to overcome size limits. With stock and barreled action separate (one box, but shorter), no problem with size limitations.

One issue you have to figure out, though, is import into the States. Since you are a US resident, you'll most likely have to pay customs on whatever value you can realisticly declare the gun at. Secondly, you may have to have the gun sent to an FFL to overcome issues of acquiring a firearm from outside your home (or neighbouring) states. I don't know if you need any sort of import permit, and who would issue it?? Nor do I know if you need an export permit from Norway, you do need one from Denmark, but I did not bother with one from Switzerland.

As a non-US resident, when I last sent a rifle to the US (for repairs), I had applied with BATF for a temporary (visitor's) import permit, and I sent my rifle to an FFL holder.

It may sound a bit complicated, but it all worked out OK for me. Good luck with your new Sako, nice guns!

Ah, I found the following on Gunbroker's FAQ page. It outlines the procedures for importing firearms into the US. Maybe this would be of interest??

quote:
Importing Firearms into the US

If you live outside the US and wish to sell an item on GunBroker.com to a US resident, the item will need to be legally imported into the US. Any Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder can import a firearm for personal use or on behalf of an unlicensed person by filling out the proper paperwork. According to the ATF:

(L1) May a licensed dealer who does not have an importer's license make an occasional importation?

Yes. A licensee may make an occasional importation of a firearm for a nonlicensee or for the licensee's personal use (not for resale). The licensee must first submit a ATF Form 6, Part I to the Imports Branch for approval. The licensee may then present the approved Form 6 and completed ATF Form 6A to the U.S. Customs Service. Contact the Bureau of ATF, Imports Branch, Washington, DC 20226, (202) 927-8320 for forms.

There are a great many items that cannot be imported into the US. These include 'armor piercing' ammo, high-capacity magazines, and so-called 'assault weapons'. Please contact your FFL to make import arrangements and verify the legality of the item you are attempting to import before placing a bid on an item.

If the item is not a firearm (such as scopes, holsters, etc.) then the item can be sent into the US without any special importation procedure other than filling out a standard US Customs form.

There is a great deal of additional information on the ATF web site at: http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/index.htm

Take special note of this part of Mikes advice. And get the seller to make a sales slip with a low price, that is shipped with the gun. Wink
