Gentlemen,

I would be very interested to hear how the locals or visitors go about hunting in the Alps or indeed other mountains in Europe.

Game species, methods, seasons etc etc. I am particularly interested in Chamois.

1894, I'll offer my $0.02... Unless you know somebody who can invite you, and if you are specifically interested in hunting in the Alps (as opposed to any old bunch of mountains with Chamois - which would also include the Balkan countries and the Pyrenees among others), I think you'll find either Austria or France to be your best bet.

Austria has a tradition of catering for paying guests, and depending on hunting area you can find very high standards in both quality of animals and quality of guides. All at a price, understandably, and depending on what kind of animal you are after. Here the best bet may be to contact one or two hunting consultants in Austria. Look for "Artemis" on the net, or try Mistral.

France is a bit different. The way to hunt here is to apply with the authorities for a Chamois of a particular class, and classes that are not that sought after can be had for a fairly reasonable price. I'll see if I can remember to bring in more info for you.

Others may have better ideas...

1894,

You might want to give Coch Y Bonddu a ring and see if they have a copy of:
"Alpine Hunting in New Zealand" by Roger Lentle and Frank Saxton.

Although not exactly what you want,it will give you quite a bit of useful background info which I assume will be equally applicable to Europe as New Zealand. The book is quite comprehenisive with detailed chapters on both Chamois and Tahr, along other chapters on equipment, techniques and safety ect...Well worth a read IMHO...

Regards,

Pete
