Hi there,

I have just booked the flights to South Africa for next Arpil. Going Heathrow to Jo'burg for a couple of days and then by car on to my friends farm near Nelspruit, there will be a group of 5 adults, one teenager and one child.

We are intending on going hunting for about 4-5 days in the two week break and I am hoping for some pointers from fellow AR members who have ventured to SA from the UK before.

--------------------

Do I need a Visa? I think not, but thought I would ask!

Do I need Jabs/Medication I need to travel from the UK to SA? I assume Malaria and will obviously check with the Doc nearer the time, just wondered what to expect.

How would I go about bringing trophies back to the UK? Probably only realistically looking at an Impala head but quite fancy getting a shoulder mount done as it is my first African hunt. I assume I would need to give the cape/horns to someone in SA and they stuff and then export it to me back in the UK? What sort of money are we talking for something like that and anyone got a company to reccomend? Also on the bill are Warthog and possibly Kudu, how would I stand with the Warthog tusks, can they simply go in the suitcase?

If I wanted to take an O/U shotgun with me then how hard is that? We are flying SAA who I am fairly sure are gun friendly, but what sort of grief/paperwork will I get/need for the trip if I decided to take a shotty? Would there be delays at either end?

Finally, anyone who has been to SA recently, what do you percieve the crime level to be like. Since booking the flights I have done a little research, but wondered if fellow AR members had experienced any crime in SA?

Many thanks for any advise Smiler

Kyle

Kyle

My last visit was a few years back and much of the info could have changed.

Repost this the African forum - you will undoubtedly get a response from someone with up to date info. Many of your queries are answered in the stickies that head the forum.

Be clear about the current paperwork needed to transit Jo'burg - enjoy!

Ian,

Thanks for the response, I have read a few of the stickys, but got the idea that most of them are associated with travel from America. I figured I would see if anyone from the UK had any info. I will repost later though as you suggest Smiler

Hi Kyle,

I travelled to Kirkwood (SA)this spring from Heathrow. . We were hunting in the area, so I guess my info would be as up to date as possible.

I shall PM you a number so you can call.

Been twice, once for a 1 week hunt, and just returned from 2 week family trip to Kruger for game watching with a couple of days of hunting mixed in.
I took a shotgun first time, leaving UK not tricky, entering SA wasn't really an issue. You need some paperwork generated at the SA end by the PH, once you've got it there was just some cchecking and rubber stamping (no rubber truncheoning!).
Not sure on mossie situation in April, best to check, but in August I didn't take any extra vaccinations except HepA, no malarial...there were no mossies at all, not one, not ever..Doc's can be very overprotective with jabs etc. Locals told me that anti-malarials can be a bad idea: they mask the symptoms of the worst (Cerebral) kind and therefore you don't get treatment until too late. If caught early Malaria is eaily treated with drugs.

Crime? Not an issue really if you are in the kind of sensible places you are most likely to be in. Driving through the Trust Areas between Hazyview and Nelspruit it was obvious that a vehicle breakdown would be potentially VERY bad news.

You'll have a great time! Don't worry about it.

RARMs,

I will be out there at the same time as you next year by the looks of things. Not entirely sure of what location I'll be hunting yet though.

keep in mind that if you are hunting on a freinds ranch, and wish to export the trophies., you will need to have them entered on a ph's licence.

Thanks for the replies, Puntgunner, thanks for the PM I will call at some point Smiler

Any ideas how I would get the shotgun out there without the PH paperwork? I can get like a permission letter from my friend for her farm? That any good do you think?

Thanks

Kyle

Rarms,

As far as I know that isn't possible as the PH's licence details and outfitter number go on the letter of invitation. I'm not sure what the form is if you wish to take the shotgun out there to shoot clays with say...

That won't solve the issue of exporting the trophies to the UK though if hunted without a PH.

You might want to speak to Shakari from this forum who will know how to get the gun out there.
