If you’ve hunted in the US how did you fulfill the hunter education requirements? I’ve been checking the NY State Hunting and Trapping Regulations and it appears in order to get a license I need to show a hunter education certificate or a previous hunting or big game license. Has anyone used a non-US hunting license to meet this requirement? I’ll certainly be contacting the appropriate office when it comes time, but was wondering what other people’s experiences have been, especially if you’ve hunted in the US for the first time in the past few years. - stu

Stu, I would think your local hunting liscense would suffice.

NY state was the first state to require a hunter safety course [1959 ?] Most if not all states require it now.Your present hunting license should be ok but you might check. You will not be permitted to possess ,use ,hunt with or carry a handgun !!

Each state varies in its requirements. Not all states accept another state (country) license. In some states you have to show the hunter course certificate if you are from out of state. You need to contact the state you may be hunting in to double check. Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

I have submitted any of my European hunting licences as a qualification - although I mostly use my German or Swiss licences for the purpose. The educational requirements for these licences normally exceed the US requirements by a wide margin. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... Well, a call to a nice lady at the NY DEC produced a fax number and advice that I should send in a copy of my current license for assessment. She set me up with a customer number and I’ll be able to know the assessment outcome well before licenses actually go on sale. That’ll help with planning. Cheers, - stu

For info, the hunter safety course in NY is I believe 8 hours, usually held over 2 or 3 evenings at a local conservation club. Must be given by a certified instructor. Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

Stu C, If you have the time and the inclination, I'd call a NY gun shop that issues licenses and ask them. Ultimately they will be issuing it anyway. If you don't mind waiting sometime in the next week or so when I get a chance I'll stop in a NY license issuing agent and ask them directly. They will ultimately quote from the DEC's handbook anyway. No good deed goes unpunished.

Stu C, I went to the NYS DEC web site to research it for you. It appears you now need an import license for your guns and some other requirements. I copied a few websites for you I hope they help. http://www.ihea.com/stateinfo/index.php?go=ny http://www.atf.gov/firearms/form6nia/index.htm http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/wildlife/gunimport.htm http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/press/pressrel/2002/2002x45.html No good deed goes unpunished.

Foxfire, Thanks for those links and the idea to call a NY gunshop. I've got the ATF Form 6NIA covered in my plans already. Nice heads up though. - stu

Stu C, This is copied directly off the NYS DEC website. Hunting License Information License Eligibility Requirements Mandatory Hunter Education: A hunter education course is required for persons who cannot show proof that they have ever possessed a hunting license. The general course is a minimum 10 hours in length. DEC honors hunter education certificates and sporting licenses from all other states and countries. No good deed goes unpunished.
