Sauer 202 bolt...?

I would like to clear up something...

Does the 202 .308 use the same bolt as the other, longer, mauser size case-head cartriges? (e.g .30-06, 7x64, 6,5, .270) OR does it use the shorter bolt that the .243 uses?

I was under the impression that the .308 barrel needs the same bolt as the .243 but now heard the it uses the same bolt as others in that case head group? from .25-06 through to 9,3

I know there are some 202 users here...!

Thanks

kayaker,

I have two Sauer 202 rifles: one in 9,3x62 and another one in 8x68S.
The 9,3 has a Medium bolt and the 8x68S a Magnum bolt.
And according to Sauer's manuals there are 5 different bolts: Mini - for .222 and .223; Medium Short for .22-250 and .243; Medium for .25-06 up to 9,3x62 (including the .308 of course!); Magnum Medium for 6,5-284 Norma and Magnum for all the large calibres.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks...I see now the .308 is the same bolt as all the others of the same case-head, except the .22-250 and .243

Good info!

One more question...

Can the 202 stutzen forend be used (with the right barrel of course) on any 202?

In other words could you have one regular 22" or 23.5" barrel and half stock and then switch that for a stutzen barrel and forend?

Cheers

I am not 100% sure but, taking into consideration the way the forend engages and attaches to the receiver, I can’t see why not.
I believe that any forend (with the proper spanner and bolt) can be installed in any receiver, as the forend housing seems to be identical in all receivers.

I’m afraid it’s not that simple:

Here’s the answer I got from Sauer about barrel and forend interchangeability of a Sauer 202 Stutzen.

quote:
Dear Mr. Rodrigues,

Attached picture shows you the two synthetic inlays in the fore end.
Next to the stock you see them as spare parts.
When disassembling the fore end the user always has to make sure that he does not loose these inlays, otherwise accuracy will be lost.

With these inlays we really can claim to have the best shooting Stutzen in the world. Your experience with this rifle shows that we are right.

When taking off the fore end and putting it on again (with inlays) nothing will happen to accuracy because you still have the same barrel in the gun.

But when now changing the barrel it can happen that the length of the stock leads to the problem that the hole of the metal cap is not 100 % in position for the hole in the new barrel.
When then assembling the metal cap and fixing the screw at the muzzle you can get tension on the barrel which will finally leads to bad accuracy.
Therefore we tell the market that there is no barrel interchange ability at the Stutzen because the user cannot change the hole in the cap or adjust length of the stock perfectly.

Here in the factory we just take a new fore end with perfect length that the hole of the cap fits exactly to the hole of the new barrel. Therefore we can change barrels but it might happen that we need a new fore end. So it is almost impossible to have one Stutzen with one fore end but two or more barrels because you cannot manufacture wood to this precise tolerance.

I hope this answers your questions.

Best regards
