Hi Guys, I need to make some space in my gun cabinet, anybody give me an idea of value of my sqaure bridge Obendorf Mauser, made circa 1926 (as identified by Rigbys from the serial number, rang Mauser in Germany but apparently they are a little short of records due to some sort of factory fire around 1939-45 !) Originally made for the East African big game market in .404 Jeffrey, re-chambered in .338 Win Mag late 1970's with a Douglas Match Grade barrel, which is when I bought it, it has the 9 1/4" commercial big game action which was not made after 1936. Oiled Walnut stock, Jaeger trigger (still have original as well), had about 350 rnds through it. Any help would be appreciated. Mike

Where are you mate? Or if you're shy, what currency would the transaction involve Regards, Amir

You should post some photos; anyway, IMO, the rebarreling has certainly diminished the value, as a collector item.

Hi Amir, Can post some pics if it helps, I am based Wirral, going to Bedford end of this month to shoot some Munty's and Fallow, near to Baldock. Have not posted any pics on here before, is it straightforward and what is best format/size. I usually find PDFs are best for emailing. all the best Mike PS I am also thinking of getting rid of a Mannlicher Schonauer GK in .270, had this about 8 years but not taken it out as its too good to get wet ! It was in virtually unfired condition when I bought it. Pecar 4 x 81 scope on Apel mounts, plus a variable Pecar 3-7 x 81 I bought to get some more mag for stalking. Always use my .270 Finnlight thesedays.

Posting pictures is quite an easy process. Register for free on a photo hosting website like www.photobucket.com etc. Then, upload pictures from your PC or mobile phone onto the website.Once upload is finished, you can copy the image tag of the photo you want and paste in your post. Voila, you are done. Ideal size for internet is 640X480.You can choose the size, too, while uploading. Now,sir,I look forward to the pictures of your Mauser.Thank you. Square bridge? That seems to me a military M98 action....

Wildboar - a K98 is 8.5 inches long in the bolt, this is 9.5 inches long and is Commercial manufacture, commercial manufacture of Mauser sporting actions ceased in 1936 due to a big contract from a Mr. Hitler. I only know this because it in De Haas History of Bolt Action Rifles, and I spoke to a very nice man at Rigbys, who had a big book with all the serial numbers of all the Mauser big game actions bought in by Rigbys to make Sporting Rifles. From my serial number he was able to date it at 1926 as Rigbys had bought Mauser actions with numbers before and after. The square bridge is at the back of the receiver, some sporting Mauser actions have either one or two Square bridges, don't know why perhaps someone knowledgeable might be able to comment. thanks Mike

Mike, no offence intended, of course! Square bridge, as far as I know, means a flat upper part of the action, to ease the installation of scope mounts and the one that I see is round; it has the thumb slot in the left action rail too, and that seemed to me typical of a M98 military action, but I'm not an expert. Somebody else will certainly tell us more. P.S. A nice looking rifle.

Has anyone out there got a copy of: Mauser Oberndorf, The Mauser Archive by Jon Speed, if so could you look this up for me. Magnum action commercial sporter, serial no. 22281. Bolt length 9.5 inches. thanks Mike

flyboy can you post a picture of the rear of the action and the proff marks. as of the pictures now you have a restocked and rebarreled mauser 98 of some kind, the slant box mag could mean a rigby but it could also mean a german guild gun. the weaver base do not do it any favors either. because if it is a rigby magnum action it would state that, right under the weaver base. please show the markings on the action. As of now it is a 100 £ gun at the auctions. did you get a copy or a letter stating its origins from the bookholder.? best regards peter

Hi Peter, The Rifle had the weaver bases and a set of steel weaver rings on it when I bought it, I recently changed the scope for a Bushnell Elite 4200 with illuminated reticle, but only rings I could get were a little high. I have removed the stock and photographed the numbers on the action, I have never removed the weaver bases. The Magazine box is angled, something I had not appreciated before. The Rifle was put together by a master Gunsmith - Vic Ilsley, Liverpool and was seized by HM Customs & Excise for non-payment of VAT, I bought it at auction without provenance, I was unaware of its origins until a conversation with a fellow candidate on my DSC 1 course back in 2001, who seemed to get quite excited about it. As I said in my earlier posting, I contacted Rigbys and they gave me the date of the action and the suggestion that it was made for the East African Safari market, probably chambered in .404 Jeffrey. It was my intention to have this re-barrelled in the original calibre when the .338 barrel is shot out, but that may be some time as it still shoots really well. regards Mike

You are right Mike; your bolt seems to be longer than mine..... http://forums.accuratereloadin...5421043/m/6801087001 You could ask in the "Gunsmithing" room too.

mike thanks for that info, now i get it. so you have a magnum obendorf action which paul roberts(i presume)dated for you. the action with slant box mag, is quite valueble in itself. the barrel, stock and the weaver bases are just in the way regarding value. current value is allways hard, the gunsmithing forum would know though. i think you should get a good london gunsmith to take it back to a 404 j in the english sporting configuration. my 2 cents best regards peter
