I must say in all honesty I think a very enjoyable weekend was had by all. IanF, Artemis and Pete"The Fox Lover"-E came over to me on Friday for a little excursion to try and roll over some fallow bucks before the end of the season.

All in all it was an excellent weeekend, in which everyone scored. IanF getting two. the second was taken at a trot with the 375H+H, but more of that later.

Friday Evening found me in a seat with Artemis and me gassing about all things hunting instead of paying attention to the matter in hand. A text from Ian let us know that a buck was making his way up the hedge from his side towards us, at which point we saw him. As soon as the rifle went up he started running towards us, looking very skittish. Just as he looked like he was going to take off, The 270 did it's thing and the buck piled up a couple of paces away. We were of the mark. Ian had 15 in front of him but the swirling winds with us on three sides of the wood were making the deer very skittish. They wouldn't hold for a shot so he kindly asked them to go over to Pete to be shot. The deer duly obliged, and went to the other side of the wood where Monsieur Taff was perched in his tree. Lining out broadside at about 40yds the 308 remained silent... Apparently they all looked too pretty to shoot, and it was a bit dark or he thought he heard a ghost or something... Wink Anyway no more deer shot that night.

Saturday mng started early at 3-30, and Ian and I sat in a seat while Artemis scouted out a new feild. Pete was in his tree again.

After an hour or so a Buck started grazing down the hill behind us. As the buck came level with us he turned 90 degrees and walked practically underneath the seat, where he winded us. As he went to bolt, the phone went, and some welsh madman was shouting something like "Bloody Shoe-tit!! Bloody Shoe-Tit!!"....

The buck made the error of stopping to take a look at us and Ians 270 hit its mark putting number two in the chiller.

Artemis had seen the same buck Ian had shot from accross the road, and watched him come over the brow towards us. Pete had a Buck Walk past his seat at about 20yds and 3 inches, but he wasn't sure he had backstop. jumping Ho Hum!!

Saturday eveening was our last outing so I thought I would try and bring some of my luck to "Peta-Pete". We sat up and the fox incident happened but we won't talk about that...

Then Ian's 375H+H, did the business at a trottting buck out of a herd of 15, on the far side of the wood.

About 30mins later Pete had a chance at a pricket, (buck fawn...) that came down the feild towards Pete's tree. The buck (fawn) then sat down a full 37yds away, turned sideways, and went to sleep... Pete pulled out an ammo wallet, played "eeny-meeny-miney-mo" to pick a round then the same to pick a second. He chambered the rounds, licked his finger to test the wind, and asked me to "hold my breath as I was rocking the seat" 27 minutes after the buck had fallen asleep, woken up, and then had its dinner, Pete had got control of his heartbeat like a true sniper & went through both shoulders with the 308. An excellent shot indeed on what Ian kept reminding him was a rather small target, and definately smaller than his!! pissers

Hopefully the Fox will have enough gralloch to keep him fed for a few days without eating my pheasants!!!

All in all a great weekend and excellent way to round of the season, with good sport and good company beer. I think the guys have some photos, which I'm sure they will post if they can, and no doubt there will be another version of events... Wink

Best Rgds,

Arild,

I left just before mid day on Sunday and apparently missed a major rescue operation when a certain person got stuck on their garage roof when their bottle went after climbing up there!! Big Grin Big Grin

I suspect that a rescue was only effected to prevent a repeat of the day befores earthquake had he been forced to jump! Razzer

Regards,

Pete

Hi all,

I suppose after a week of besmirching Pete's good name I should actually be fair and give some credit where it was due.

His buck was came into the feild about 250yds away off of the road. he was grazing away quite happily and suddenly decided he needed to get into the cover of the wood at the botttom of the hill. He took off and flew down the hill stopping for probably less than a second to ffind a way throughthe bracken and over the ditch. Pete hit him with a perfect high heart shot at about 170yds. Given the time he had and the pressure he had put himself under to get a buck, this was an exceptionally good shoot.

Apart form that everything else I told you is entirely true including the "is it a horse? Is it a Sheep?" conversation...

Now can I keep the beer Mr Moderator?
