Ireland has some excellent snipe shooting.

But there are some wired laws regarding firearms. I think the upper limit in the Republic of Ireland is 270 Winchester.

In Northern Ireland normal UK laws apply.

I asked my friend who lived in Ireland. He said the wing shooting is excellent. Hare is very good too. When asked on calibre of hunting rifles he thought it was 6mm? as the max. He never really hunted big game so he was not really familiar the laws

My wife and I went to Ireland for our honeymoon.

We spent much of our time as far away from the cities as possible. On one of our drives in the SE portion of the country we saw several of what I am assuming were Red Stags. The male was quite large with an impressive rack. This was early evening and he appeared to be hearding his ladies down from the mountain side to a thick brushy valley below. Later that evening at a pub we asked the local patrons about the stags. I was told they are around but, are rather rare and not to often seen.

I certainly would love the chance to hunt them in the country of my fathers, fahters!!!!

Regards,
Dave

Up to fairly recently, south of the border, stalkers were restricted to .222 calibre rifles and because of this you saw a few odd wildcats around shooting heavy for caliber bullets. The law has since changed to allow a maximum caliber of .277 as deerdogs says. I have not seen the exact wording so I don't know if there is an upper engery limit with that as well.

Pete

Ireland is a really good sporting country with good snipe and woodcock shooting to be had...cheap too if you have contacts with landowners. Although not as famous as the UK, the pheasant shooting is also great.
I don't think there are any huge eastern-european type stags to be had, but my cousin rents a tract of land from the forestry commission and shoots fallow/sika/red deer. I think people there can only have 2 centerfires and unlimited shotguns...classic over-beaurocratic system of applying for licences and getting letters from landowners etc.
Oh yeah, some parts of Ireland have pretty good feral goat shooting too!

Ensure your guide is above board. A recent case saw an English guide and client being caught shooting red deer in Killarney with no permission from the landowner and no firearms import permit. Red deer are protected in Killarney!

All firearms and optics (from both) permanently confiscated and a 500Euro fine! European criminal records all round and imminent loss of English FACs I would think.

RE whacky firearms law. In NI you might be allowed to have a 308 but you have to store it at the police station or gunshop and give notice when you're taking it out to hunt!
