I know a lot of the guys here have young children. My second boy Matt is mad for all things shooting, fishing, stalking etc. I have felt he was really too young for a full day in the field over the sort rough ground we normally hunt here in NI. I have had him out for bits of stalks on easy ground (no luck yet), half days fishing etc. Anyway, I thought last Saturday was a nice day, though cold. We were going for a little game shoot down in Fermanagh, really only a half day, 70-80 birds for 7 guns. So myself and a few if the lads decided we would bring some of our boys with us. Four turned out, and they seem to have a great day out. You will see that Matt decided he would rather hang out with the pickers up than the beaters. He seemed to enjoy it, has not shut up since. Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Well Done Brian & Matt! Gotta admit the Boy's not daft. Picking-up beats the Hellouta trudging through the thickets; plus obviously prooving he's Goal-Oriented; Beaters don't get the Birds, either. Se ya next month! Cheers, Number 10

Great stuff Brian, The trouble will start when he starts shooting better than you and starts asking for his own guns!! I can't wait to do the same with Leon. It was his first day at school today, so I'm sure it won't be long before I hear the words, "why did you miss that one dad..." K

Cheers guys. Kiri, Matt is 8, nearly 9. He is starting to get male humour and takes the mick out of his old man. We were in the pub for lunch after the shoot. He pipes up, "daddy, you shot nine ducks, but I had to kill four of them with my stick..." the lads got a laugh out of that. He scurried up and down behind the line during the duck drive picking up the fallen and dispatching cripples with the stick like an old hand. We decided he was more use than any of the Lab's on parade. The only problem now is that he thinks he can do this every week. Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Wonderful stuff Brian, the smile on the little lads face should tell you he will be along every week! Is this the same lad that caught that mighty salmon a little while ago? He's doing very well.

Brian, A bit further down the line one of the syndicate guns boys has been beating for us for several years, ( I'm sure he was about three foot shorter when he started!!) Anyway I gave him his first driven day on Saturday and spent the day on the peg with him trying to give a little guidance. He was pretty bloody excited, that's for sure and I think I had more fun watching him shoot as I would have had holding the gun myself. He didn't manage to drop one but that's not too dissimilar to most of us when we start out. Getting the kids involved and watching them progress is what it is all about. K
