If you're going subsonic, why not a heavier bullet?

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

Lapua makes factory 200gn subsonics, that might be of some help even if it's not the wieght you'r looking for.
The trajectory will be pretty much the same because the MV will still me 300mps.
It's usually wise to go with the heaviest bullet you can stailize when going subsonic, for the above reason.
Cheers.

Am I correct in saying one have to have a specific twist barrel to stabilise those heavy 200 grainer so a normal twist 308 even can cycle them will not stabilise them.

I tried some 180 grain subsonic rounds in a steyr scout 308 and it could'nt stabilise the round. Accuracy was not acceptable. Nice and quiet in a moderated rifle but just not accurate enough.

You might try Paul at global rifle.

thanks for all the replies, have just come in through the door from a flying visit Italy.
The reason I am asking is that a very good friend of mine shoots round his farm and uses sub's but the powder he uses is very dirty to use. The powder that he originally had which was very clean is no longer available and wishes to know what every one else uses, regards
griff

The problem with stabilizing subsonic bullets is that it no longer comes down to the leight (read: length) of the bullet, the reduced velocity changes the dynamics of it all and things get unpredictable.
My .308 would happily shoot 200 grain bullets with a 1:10 twist, but it would not shoot the subsonics accurately either. You just have to try to find out.

Griff: If your friend wants a cleaner powder try a VV podwer, they are very clean burning and you should be able to find subsonic data for them too.

I have had some success with 180gr RCBS gas checked cast bullets in my .308.

I loaded them with 7 grains of bullseye. On the chronograph they were circa 1060 - 1090 fps which was right on the sub/super sonic limit with one or two 'cracking'.

These were holding about a 2" - 3" group at 100 yds with one or two fliers off about by a further 2"-3" i.e 6" off point of aim.
These were droping circa 24" from where full house loads would strike.

My rifle has a 1-12 twist. This really needs to be about 1-10 to stablise the 180gr.

I have also had good results with red dot powder, using Ed Harris recipe " The Load"

While not 308,wasnt there aM1906 Guard&M1919 Gallery 30-06 US military load using Bullseye with a 220 gr bullet? Also what load does the US sniper use in the supressed 308?IIRC the closest hit was 25m.had to be pretty quiet.

Griff,

I've been doing a bit of research myself as I now have a range 50yards from home set up that I want to limit noise on.

The standard guidance on subsonic 308 is to go for the heaviest bullet that will stabilise (likely 200gr in a 308) use cases with the flash holes enlarged (for subsonic use only!) magnum primers and small amounts of red dot taking great care to ensure no bullets get stuck.

Penetration is immense - real care needed with backstops. Accuracy generally not easy to obtain with metallic fouling build up very fast indeed. After 5 or so shots either accuracy falls off or the fouling raises pressures and just subsonic loads become supersonic.

An 8twist polygonal rifling patterned barrel with 300whisper is apparently correct.
