Austrian Politician Steps Aside After Row Over Hunting Trip

By AFP - Agence France Presse
November 13, 2024

A local leader of Austria's centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPOe) stepped back from his post Wednesday following public outrage over his participation in a hunting trip despite being under a weapons ban.

Pressure on Georg Dornauer, a deputy governor of the Tyrol province, has been mounting in recent days after a local tabloid published a photo of him posing next to a dead deer alongside two other men.

Fallen Austrian real estate tycoon Rene Benko -- whose Signa empire toppled over the largest insolvency proceedings in the Alpine country's history -- was one of the men pictured with Dornauer.

In a bid to quell the backlash, Dornauer told reporters at party headquarters Wednesday that he would "not step down" but "step aside", making way for a successor.

He said he regretted the "unfavourable optics", while stressing that "no laws were broken" during the hunting trip that Benko had attended.

"No damage occurred, I merely accompanied a friend on a hunting trip," he said, adding that he saw no "reason to resign" despite calls from fellow party members.

Earlier this week, Dornauer claimed he had not shot the deer even though he was pictured grabbing the game's antlers, while a freshly broken off twig adorned his hat -- a tradition that usually identifies the successful huntsman.

He insisted the loden green headwear he was donning in the photo was "not my hat", saying he had just borrowed it from the actual hunter, a hotel keeper.

Dornauer received a weapons ban in 2019 after he left his loaded hunting rifle unattended in his Porsche, with its windows wide open.

The resignation marks the latest scandal to hit the SPOe, which has struggled to turn its fortunes around after years of infighting.

But the party, which dominated Austria's post-war politics, could yet find itself in government following years in opposition.

The party joined exploratory talks to form a government coalition after coming third in September elections.

Unbelievable. There must be more to this story. What is meant by "despite being under a weapons ban"?

We’d be all banned here in the West for having guns in car unlocked
Typical European gun control
So he didn’t do anything but gets banned

He received the ban because he left his car with a loaded rifle in it and the windows rolled down….

Where does it end? In the lunatic left's heads when only the government can possess firearms. F them and every one of us should be committed to fighting them til death. Never will cease to amaze me how Europeans of all people would lay down their arms willingly to the govt.

Germany and Austria have the same regs on transporting weapons. If you leave a gun in your car it must be in a locked case and out of sight ie trunk or covered and the car locked.

Dornauer left his rifle - loaded - in his unlocked Porsche with the windows down. As a result he lost his hunting license and with that automatically goes your gun license(s).

Given that he is in the middle of the picture with a "Bruch" in his hat (showing that he shot the stag) it seems pretty clear that he was the successful hunter!

The fact that he was hunting with a bankrupt property tycoon just shows you who his friends are. Has little to do with the hunting and gun matter.

There is no cure for dumb!

I dont see anything wrong with locking your car if you have a gun in the vehicle.

M.Shy - I guess from your comment you can leave you car doors open in the States and guns on the seat! Maybe not the smartest thing to do IMO.

Not a lot wrong with Austrian and German gun law. Cant speak for the other 47 European countries though Smiler

Saeed you would loose that bet.

He was hunting in 2019 and left a loaded gun in his unlocked car. That cost him his hunting license.

Now he is out hunting illegally and letting people take pictures!

It's not political it's just dumb!
