With the snow and the full moon last night I spent a few hours sitting by an open field looking for the hind I still had on quota.

All quite from eight til almost midnight.
Then suddenly six reds pup up from nowhere just the way they do.

A single hind (probably the one I shot the calf from in September) are closing in to 20 meters, the wind is good, I ease up the rifle and with a heart shot she takes a couple of steps and tumble over.

The ground are semi frozen so I back the pick up truck up to her and with the winch I manage to get her "onboard".

The nights with a full moon sitting out for the reds are really something else Smiler

Nice one - looks like she never finished her mouthful!

Is there a particular reason/advantage why you hunt them at night rather than morning/evening?

Looks chilly sitting in that white stuff for 5 hours!!

Congratulations Arild Smiler

@ Boghossian, It's common to hunt at night when there is snow on the ground as it reflects the moonlight and increases visibility.

As if hunting in Norway wasn't cold enough, they sit out in the snow at night!!! Big Grin

Yes, these winternights with snow are awfull. Here, we hunt board, usually over bnait sites. It is breathtaking if you hear the steps of a big beast approaching on the frozen ground. Shot one last year with my then 11 year old son, he was sitting comfortably in a sleeping bag when that huge thing approached, he still talks about it.

Thank you guys.
Bog...the small spread of land I lease is best hunted by use of high seats or blinds overlooking the fields.
When the snow cover the ground we get very good light conditions as johner said.
The deer are feeding and not disturbed in any way, and we usually have ample time to pick the right beast.

But good clothing and high end optics are paramount.
I use a Zeiss 10x56 for spotting and Zeiss Victory 3-12x56 with red dot on my rifle.
