It was the first day of the Norwegian roe buck season today, (10th August) I arrived early at my hunting terrain around 3am and waited for the sun to come up, the light was good enough to shoot from 4:30am.

After seeing and hearing nothing I broke out the buttolo at 06:30 and 15 mins later a little buck showed up about 50 meters away in the thick forest vegetation. I had to wait till he was about 15 meters in front of me in a nice little clearing before he presented a good enough shot.

Not a medal head, but great eating Cool

How are the other Norgies getting on?

Anders,

Thats commitment, I'm sure things will come together soon.

I went out last night, didn't see a roe deer but got a nice little video of a moose with a calf about 50 meters from me, I'll try and upload it once I've transferred it from my camera.

It doesn't look good for this season.. Smiler But I'll keep going. Some dinner, then I'm off within an hour.
Looking forward to the video!
Even though I haven't shot anything I've seen a few roe. Had a fox that tried to climb my highseat and a hawk that attacked me! Well I might be exaggerating a bit here. Smiler

Good luck in your next outing!

As mentioned above, here is the video clip of the female moose with her calf.

Great to see and more than made up for not seeing a roe buck.

Hi

Nice buck. Calling in bucks is an art I never managed to learn. The first season I uses a Buttolo I lost it in some heavy bush. But I still get some bucks Smiler

I think there a year ago since my last post, busy student life doesn't allow for much forum time, nor much hunting to write about. This year I got my buck on the second day of the buck season. On the same field, and under similar circumstances as last year. Smiler I was out the previous morning and evening, and spotted a couple of bucks but never got into anything near a shooting position. So the second evening I went out with my dog to walk a bloodtrack I put out earlier in the day. On the way out I spotted a couple of deers, but I decided to walk the track anyway. On my way back home, the deers where still grazing on the fields, and I grabbed my rifle, put the dog in here cage (she goes totally bananas if I leave the house dressed in green with the rifle on my back and leave her).

I went to my lookout point where I can see most of the fields from. One young doe was grazing right by my spot. I was watching for about an hour to see if there was a buck out, but I couldn't see anything. So I gave up and walked abit along the road just to double check if I could see any bucks. And on the furthest field I saw the head of the buck. He was laying in the edge of the field resting.

Problem was that the young doe was still grazing in the middle of my way to the buck, and noway to get around her, the light was fading so I made made up my mind, and though what the heck, so I lifted my hat to scare her away, she just looked at me, and continued grazing.... I had to walk up to about 50 meters distance waving my hat before she walked slowly into the forest. I thought I had managed to get her to leave without an alarm, but as soon as she came into the forest she gave of some sharp barks of warning...

I checked if the buck left, but he just lifted his head.. so I continued the staking. At the first good position prepared for shooting I scoped the buck, but found the distance to great. 150-200 meters on a laying buck is far to great for my shooting ability.

So I went closer and into the field it self. I had very low hopes after entering the field, but after a few minutes I spotted the buck. I crawled closer, but couldn't get a proper shot, so I crawled closer... I could see the buck when I put my head up, but when I lay down to shoot, the grass cover most of the buck. He was looking right at me.. But still laying down, so I crawled closer, at about 40 meters distance I had a proper view of the buck so I lay down, waiting for the buck to get up and present a broadside shot. After about 10 min he stood up and after scratching a bit, urinating, he turned, presenting a perfect broadside shot. I put the bullet just behind his shoulder, taking bought lungs and the far shoulder. I use a 12gram Laupua Mega. Its a bit in the heavy side for roe, but it kills very reliable. He went down on the spot, just kicking a bit for 10 sec.

Not sure if I'll try to get another buck this year, the land I hunt isn't the greatest for roe, and reddeer season is close anyway Smiler

Good buck hunting everybody.

@308winchester
Congrats on the buck and great little write up, thanks for sharing. I also use Lapua Mega in my 6.5x55 155 grain/10 gram works great on roe and the accuracy is superb.

@Anders
Well done mate, persistance pays off Cool gratulerer!

calling bucks in the rut is not really a challenge, but I find calling in the Does are
I do like to keep a Buttalo handy because they do work well
I find as a rule with Bucks , they come or they don't,
only on occassions will they sort of saunter about thinking about it and that seems to be in the older bucks
this young buck just called in a treat even though he had been watching us for a while stalk in closer for a better look at him
but still he came even though he had a Doe with him

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...LoIM&feature=related

this old boy I had tried everthing on him to try and make him come to me, even barked at him at one stage
once realising he would not come,
( this is when I started filming it ) I tried just varying the buttalo to coax him out of the hedgerow (as it was not a safe shot from where I was stood cover) and hopefully just get him to step into the wheat field a couple of metres instead
but no joy

it's a satifying feeling eventually getting the actuall buck you hav been after
well done mate
I'm still chasing the old boy in the last clip, may hav lucked out as the rut seems to hav died off in my area and he's gone to ground now
hopefully catch up with him late sept

Really nice buck in the last clip. Hope you get him soon, but they seem to vanish into the ground after the rut.. Smiler
