Hornady 270 Interlock vs SST vs Light Magnum

As I have ben told I MUST use factoru ammunition on my next stalk, in my 23" barrel BRNO ZKK .270" I am looking at using Hornady as I usually reload with the 140 grain Interlock.

The choices I have in Hornady facory cartridges are limited. I WON'T use 130 grain, so am limited to 140 grain SST or 140 grain Light Magnum with 140 grain Interlock.

Will I notice an appreciable differnce in zero? It is bad enough having to spend money on factory cartridges...and then having to fire them off just to re-zero!

Also I have no experience of the 140 grain SST or the .270 "Light Magunum" load with 140 grain Interlock.

What can I expect? Which would be a better choice?

The reason for posting this is I have read the previous postings on the Hornady SST and am concerned that with my relatively long barrel and close 75 yard shots it might not be a suitable bullet?

What I have not seen a lot of is any assessment of the 270 Light Magnum ALSO are LIGHT MAGNUM cases reloadable as usual cases?

I would go with the 140 Interlocks in the light magnum - should be fine.

I agree with you, handloaded 140BTSP's are the only deer bullet I ever bother with. My handload is a relatively mild 51.5gr of N160. Excellent killer with very little meat damage if you avoid the shoulder.

If you are feeling sufficently cynical, I could post you an empty 270win box and you could put your own loads in that! Wink

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Why MUST you use factory ammos? Is the outfitter that forces you? Just curious....

go with interlocks! I have stoped using sst's in my 308 and 6.5x55 because of the damage they do, the last fallow I seen shot with an sst looked like it had been hit with an RPG! BOOM

Many thanks to all that replied. I don't know the reason "why" for the factory. I suspect it is insurance and if anyone is injured by the rifle blowing up they can sue the maker? I know that some ranges don't allow handloads as their insurance won't cover it.

Fortunately the outlet I visited, Time Hannam near Leeds, actually were able to find one hundred rounds "hidden away" of normal soft point 140 grain Hornady Interlock!

So it all worked out happily in the end!

It was very kind of those that posted to contribute and confirm my own thoughts about SST.

I have a custom built .270 on a Remington action. It is my long range rifle. 26" barrel; Leupold 6.5 - 20 scope.

I stopped handloading for this rifle years ago when Hornady came out with their light magnum ammunition. I am now using the 130 grain Interbond ammo and have been very pleased by it. Size of animals: Coues whitetails, pronghorn antelope, Sitka blacktail deer, desert mule deer and Texas whitetails. My longest measured one shot kill, 397 yards. In the past I have used the 140 grain Interbonds with good success as well.

If your shooting distance are less than 200 yards, I would tend to go with a heavier bullet at a bit lower velocity for less meat damage.
