Some near new FN Mauser 98's are due to arrive in Australia soon and I'm planning a flat shooting small Antelope/Deer/Gazelle rifle useing a Lothar Walther barrel.

Does anyone own or know of the 6.5x65RWS cartridge. I assume it is a Chamois and Roebuck cartridge.

Any info appreciated.

Code-4,

Yes, it's a real fast stepper that 6.5x65 and it also makes the books legally in The Fatherland as a Big Game cartridge, too.

There's a Blaser R93 barrel on Egun at the moment in this chambering going for €306,- which ought to tell you a thing or two about this cartridge.

Not that many folks want that much Speed.

It's known as a meat bruiser,

It's hard on the logistics since both the cartridge cases & factory ammuntion are expensive and hard to locate.

After that you're home free - it's actually an interesting cartridge that has good numbers to support it.

Have Fun with your decision.

Cheers,

I realize there is an attraction in being "different". Other than that, it seems a pretty masochist thing to go with a cartridge where brass is practically non-existant (momentarily one manufacturer, RWS, not exactly known for worldwide distribution), where components, ammo and tools are very expensive, and where the cartrdge has suffered from problems with reloading (doughnut formation requiring reaming of cases). But like I said, I guess to some being different is sufficiently attractive to bear the drawbacks.

For all the rest of us, something as profane as the ubiquitous .270 Win or even the .25-06 would do the job just as well...

Good luck with your project.

I would never ever (again) choose that cartridge.
Yes it is flat shooting , but thats all´.
Even here in Germany it is an exotic cartridge.

There is only one source for factory ammo with only one bullet and brass for a reloader is a nightmare.

My own reloading experience spans a time of more than thirty years but that cartridge made me desperate.
Yes finally it worked (Neckturning inside and outside !!!).

After two years of experimenting I sold that rifle and switched to .270 Winchester

Now, if it ABSOLUTELY has to be a .264" caliber, the better choice would be a 6.5-284. Better and more readily available brass (Lapua, Norma), better dies, equivalent velocity, known for good accuracy, no doughnut formation.

One of these cartridges either the 6.5x65 or the 6.5x65R has some problems with the brass sucking.

Choose an other one. 6,5x284 is a good choice or the .25-06. With the last, you get more factory ammo.
