Hans Riegel Dies
The Wall Street Journal published a story about Hans Riegel, the founder of Haribo. The story said his hobbies included hunting; the photo of him shows him wearing a necklace with the continent of Africa, upon which are heads of an elephant and Cape buff.

Anyone ever met him? Heard of him? Sounds like quite the guy.

He was known not only for his "gummi bärchen" but also for his outstandigly well managed small game hunting property or lease.

Hans Riegel was also a great hunter. He has hunted all over the world and has a large hall with all kind of good trophies. He gave an interview where he said the two reasons he got that old are younger women and hunting Big Grin

Dr. Hans Riegal was a passionate hunter who was extremely generous to the members of US Armed Forces, Diplomats & foriegn Businessmen stationed here in the Fatherland.

When the US Embassy was in Bonn we had an annual "Jägerabend" (translated=Hunter's Evening) at the Embassy. It was a real Gala Affair and a way to Thank the many German hunting supporters who facilitated and afforded hunting opportunities & invitations to US Hunters, and to gender Goodwill. The invitations to our local national German counterparts were highly sought after.

Dr. Riegal was always invited and he held court at the bar; I had the great pleasure of sharing a tipple or two with him on several occaisions; a real Gentleman.

He also organized a Hunt for "Foreign" Hunters at his residence in Koblenz; conveying us from Drive to Drive with a Mercedes-Benz bus through the forest & vinyards. He usually arrived with great pomp in his helicopter even though it must have only been a short flight.
